Random Musings

Recently, during a visit by , I decided to open up my 802.11b AP to the world…  I changed the SSID to “dontbegreedy” and now broadcast that SSID, and I turned off any kind of encryption.  I guess this is sort of a philanthropic experiment, my machines are pretty secure and I figure I used to get annoyed back before and I got the cable modem and “borrowed” wireless from our neighbors who eventually shut us out…  I figure that the bandwidth I need is minimal 99.9 percent of the time, and most of the day the cable modem is sitting there unused.  So hopefully this experiment goes well, people in my building know how to share, and I don’t have to lock it back down again.

While in Texas, I think it was my last day there, I had a vivid dream that gave me a fantastic idea for a short story..  It wasn’t the full story, just a little nugget that I can base a short around…  We’ll see how it goes, and when I get around to developing it, but once I do I will post it here for criticism.

Help me!

I was a Mets fan as a kid in middle school, even went to a few games at Shea…  But since that time I have given almost no attention to Baseball…  Can someone explain to me why I find myself all of the sudden watching games and even considering glancing at the sports pages?  I was warned when moving to Boston that sooner or later I would find myself transform into a Red Sox fan, but has that brainwashing finally started to take hold?  I think it really started in August when Corinna and I went to Fenway to see the Red Sox play the Blue Jays (thanks to tickets I got thru work).  Before that day I didn’t think about Baseball at all.  Since that day, however, I find myself mildly curious…  Did I find some latent enjoyment of baseball, or have I simply become one of the masses here in Beantown?

Back

After some shitty traveling (like getting stuck in Chicago for several hours) I made it back to Boston around 7:30pm last night…  I’m glad to be back north.

I forgot to mention that Garrett and I met up with and his fiancee Kiana for dinner on Wednesday…  It was great to see Dez again, because it’s been AGES since I’ve seen him last… :)  Kiana was cool too, even if I still have trouble accepting that DEZ of all people is getting married…

Leaving Las Dallas

I dislike Dallas. If you can believe it, the roads here are worse
than Boston, and that’s with the Big Dig. We didn’t actually do
any work here until Thursday, the team we were integrating with simply
wasn’t ready for us… Some of their hardware died in shipping and they
hadn’t set any of it up when we got there on Tuesday. So we hung
out waiting most of the week.

Garrett and I saw “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” this week,
and my opinion echoes most I’ve heard: It’s amazing they shot the whole
film on blue screens, but the film wasn’t very engaging… Last night,
before bed, we played a little Hold’Em tourney (Gar, myself, and the two
guys from Raytheon). I successively busted each person (Starting with
the Raytheon guys first, then taking out Gar) and won $60. I love
poker.

Time for a nice, shitty flight to Boston via Chicago….

Beers, Steers, & Queers

Today’s travel could have been worse, but it also could have been
better… Both legs (Boston to Chicago to Dallas) were right on
schedule (early, even), but I had lots of trouble getting comfortable
(especially on the second flight, cause I had someone sitting next to
me). I managed to read like 60 pages of Quicksilver on the first leg,
but I was too contorted on the second, my neck was killing me.

After some rental confusion (they didn’t list our car on the express
board), we drove to the hotel and ate dinner in the steakhouse here…
Expense reports are a wonderful thing… This hotel room now replaces
the Be interview hotel room as the swankiest hotel room I’ve ever been
in. It’s two rooms, two king size beds, pull out couch, two tv’s…
Attached are some pics, but this camera doesn’t do well in low
light.

Tad & Danielle’s Wedding

I really should have done an update covering Tad & Danielle’s wedding
before I travelled, but alas, you are just going to get the short, short
version. It was tons of fun… and I left the
apartment at 9:30a and picked up Adam & Dez… We were running a bit
late and scooted into the place with like 10 mins to spare….

The hall or whatever you call it was really nice, as was the
ceremony… DJ looked beautiful, and it was nice to be at another
not-very-religious wedding service… There were so many friends there,
so many people I haven’t seen in ages… It was just a wonderful
time….

After the reception there was a party at shaggy’s place in NH. Some
poor judgement was invoked when we decided to drive back to Boston to
change into street clothes before the party. Corinna and I forgot a
change of clothes in the mad rush to leave in the morning… So we took
a 3ish hour detour, and we dragged Dez with us. But we finally got to
the party on fumes and having to pee real bad… It was tons of fun,
but corinna didn’t really enjoy herself since she didn’t really know
anyone and I was spending lots of time catching up with people…

Wheeee

I will be in Garland, TX next week from Monday thru Friday (for work). Garland is near Dallas, so if anyone reading this lives out that-a-way please drop a line!
