I was jack’s online journal

Back on June 25th, 2000 I posted my first entry over at LiveJournal.  10 years, 2,778 entries, and 6,347 comments later I’ve decided that it is time to move on.

Realistically, between sites like twitter, flickr, and my bookmarks over at delicious I simply don’t end up posting to my LJ as much anymore.  LJ used to really appeal to me due to the large community and the discussions it generated.  But now it feels more like just another abandoned alleyway on the Internet.  I suspect that most people who read my posts do so through RSS or Facebook anyway.

So i have moved everything over to my new blog at https://sean-graham.com/.  For the time being I will leave a cross-posting script set up to post my entries over there to LJ, but I don’t know how long that will last.  I have disabled comments on my LJ, so if you want to discuss a posting of mine there will be a link at the bottom of each post to bring you back to my WordPress blog.

The edges are still rough at the new place, and while most of the content and comments have imported successfully, there were a few problems (100 or so anonymous comments seem to have been assigned to the wrong posts), but so it goes…  I have been manually going through and fixing these edge cases when I have the time.  The look of the new blog will probably change quite a bit in the near future.

So there it is.  Update your bookmarks, RSS readers, etc.  This is a perfect time to also start ignoring me.  I rarely have anything of value to say anyhow.  :)

Weird

This post from a few months ago has been getting lots of anonymous fanboy/girl comments in the past week or so.. They’ve been totally teeny-bopper incomprehensible, so I’ve just been blowing them away.. But they’ve been coming from different IP addresses, so I wonder if it got posted somewhere..

Man, I’m a Bitch

This weekend I was a total slob bitch, and while wanted to hang out with people, I didn’t feel up to it and needed a break, so we stayed home pretty much the whole weekend. I’ve just done something social for what seems like every weekend for a month or two straight, and while some people might be fine with that, the anti-social kernel of my being resists this sometimes. What makes matters worse is that I have plans for the next 4 weekends which involve travel… (Jersey, Rochester, Vermont, New Mexico).

We did go out with the SNFC to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory last night… Want my short review? The creation of this film was pointless exercise.. It didn’t really do anything better than the original film, and while the remake was closer to the text of the book, I think it just missed the mark…

Corinna and I have tickets to a free preview screening of The Devil’s Rejects on Wednesday. We both enjoyed House of 1000 Corpses, so hopefully Mr. Zombie will do a good job again.

I’ve been slowly going through and tagging my entries, starting at the beginning, back in June of 2000. So far I am up to February of 2001, and I’ve been at it for a week or two now.. I have almost 2200 posts total, so this is going to take awhile. The most popular tags are school (73), travel (42), csh (41), and whining (37), but that’s mostly a function of time (I was still in school in 2000-2001, so there are obviously going to be lots of school posts… :P). I suspect at the end of this tagging fiesta whining will win out.

Some unpublicized LJ features

A few people on my friends list have been using these new features, but I don’t think that many people know about them… There are a few LJ specific HTML tags that have been quietly introduced into the system:

  • <lj user=”username”> is a shortcut that gives you a little userinfo icon that links to the specified user and a link to the users journal, like this: grahams
  • <lj-cut> allows you to hide part of your journal behind a “Read More” link. The tag, and all text following it will be replaced by a “Read More” link… Clicking on the link will reveal the hidden text.
  • lj://user/username is a quick URL that gets rewritten on the server to http://www.livejournal.com/users/username.
  • And of course, there are the semi new-fangled poll tags.

Just figured some of y’all might like to know that… By the way, it does piss me off that these standalone tags don’t conform to the XML standard, but I can’t do anything about it.. :)

That sucks

The friends page that I integrated into my personal web page won’t show me entries done by friends who only allow their journal to be seen by friends only (because I can’t be ‘logged in’ and yank the page from the LJ servers, AFAIK).

I finished laying out the playlist plugin for SoundPlay last night, I even have the playlist placed and colored in the proper place, but I still need to make all the buttons, bells, and whistles work. One really annoying thing about the way WinAmp does playlist skins is that the buttons are all one sprite, so I have to divide the one sprite into several in code as opposed to having different sprites for each button. What a dumb thing. I also have to code a replacement for BScrollBar and BScrollView, so I can integrate the skinned scrollbar into the playlist window (it looks mighty lame with the default Be scrollbar in this mega-skinned window. :P

Late mornings rock.

I slept in way late this morning, but was woken up by a phone call from Chris. That’s ok, there are certain people allowed to wake me up. :)

I haven’t really gotten in swing yet, I need to prepare for Calc later today…. After that, there are a few things I want to tackle in AliveJournal… I am trying to get one little thing done on it every day, since I haven’t many large chunks of unassigned time in the past week or so..

Now, however, I am gonna go grab some chow.

Ok, Let’s Play Pool

Almost time to go off to my Billiards class…. That class is usually relaxing, and I hope it is today as well… I have been getting slowly better at the game, hopefully that will improve as the quarter moves on. This weekend is catching up with me, and I should have really gotten more rest. I am really tired right now, and I still have 2 more classes to go today. :)

I am looking forward to this upcoming visit, since Chuck is going to visit (weather providing). In chem lab I was daydreaming about things to work on for AliveJournal. Last Thursday I spent a decent chunk of time trying to betterify the code I had written for music and moods, and I ran into a brick wall…. I had reverted the code and had just gone with what worked, but I think I am going to give it a second try (I hate letting code beat me.. :P).

Oh glorious weekend, lay thine free time upon me

Spent alot of time working on various things today… I got a bug report for the beta of AliveJournal that I floated yesterday, but I can’t reproduce it for the life of me. I also just noticed that the picture names are being returned alphabetically from the server now, so I have to figure out how to determine which one is the default one….

I am going to wrap up a few loose ends, call Chris and say goodnight, and then go to bed (listening to Huey).

TFWO

Time for bed…. Today was very productive on many levels… I did well on that quiz (as far as I can tell), I studied for my 2 exams tomorrow, I released a beta of AliveJournal today, which has huge fundamental changes, but not much in the realm of user-visible differences.

Now I am going to wrap up some loose ends, pack up for my early exam, and hit the hay. Nighty-night.
