Bulleted Quasi-Unrelated Information

  • Last Sunday I caught Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story with the film club. It’s a Paintball Mockumentary starring Rob Corddry from the Daily Show. Funny, but you don’t need to see it in a theatre, and you won’t be rolling around on the floor paralyzed from laughter.
  • For whatever reason the past few weeks I decided to catch up with the rest of the world and watch 24. I had watched about half of the first season about a year ago when I was laid up with my leg. I enjoyed the episodes I watched then, but somehow got distracted and never finished it. Well, last weekend I picked up that torch and blew through like 12 episodes of the first season, and moved directly into the second season, which I finished a few nights ago. The show is way over the top, but it’s fun, and eliminating the week-to-week suspense by waiting several years to start the series makes it less frustrating. My dad watches the show, so I’ve seen a few episodes of the third season, from when I was living at home again, but I had no idea what was going on when I was watching it… I watched the first episode of the third season directly after the last episode of the second, which was good, because they left a serious cliffhanger going on there that would have driven me crazy.
  • My new phone is pretty nice so far, but there are a few things that frustrate me. A few of you have asked for a review, I’ll get to that in a week or two, or something.

Prediction

Anyone else find it suspicious that ABC (owned by Disney) was the first network to offer its content through the iTunes Music Store, even though Pixar (also helmed by Steve Jobs) gave Disney the big ol’ fuck you to Disney? We all know how spiteful Jobs is… My prediction: Disney and Pixar kiss and make up…

Tivo Part Deux

Ok, So I investigated the Tivo thing a bit more, and it turns out that a while ago it was advantageous to get the Sony unit because it was cheaper, but this is no longer true. The feature set between the two brands is almost identical, the Sony has a lousy remote compared to the Phillips, and the Sony is more expensive (although not that much more).

A bigger problem is that Tivo doesn’t support my ghetto A/B cable system, and won’t ever. I would have to jump through all kinds of hoops in order to get it to work, and it simply isn’t worth it.

I am now thinking about getting a DirecTV receiver with built in Tivo, and just get rid of my shitty cable service.

There are two problems with that:

  • Placing the Antenna – I am supposed to get my landlord’s permission, which I will attempt. If he doesn’t give me permission, I can always invoke FCC law which “…prohibits restrictions that impair the installation, maintenance or use of antennas used to receive video programming.” and “Effective January 22, 1999, the Commission amended the rule so that it also applies to rental property where the renter has an exclusive use area, such as a balcony or patio.”. So the “Patio of Doom” may very well be my ticket to DirecTV.
  • Having the Right Sky – I am not sure if my sky is good for DirecTV… I will try and figure that out tonight… I see other people with dishes on my block, but I think they are all Dish Network.

There are a couple of advantages however:

  • Cost – Believe it or not, this whole operation will be cheaper overall. The 35 hour Tivo-ed DTV receiver is $399, but there is a rebate bringing it down to the same price as the normal 30 hour box. The DirecTV service, even with HBO and the like added comes to around $50 a month, which is $10 a month cheaper than my cable bill, with more channels.
  • Second Tuner – The Tivo’ed DirecTV receivers have two tuners built into them, so you can record a program while watching another, or record two programs at once. This is a great advantage over the normal Tivo receiver.
  • Get Rid of Ghetto Cable – My cable system blows, and it would be great to get rid of it. Of most annoyance is the A/B setup, where I have to press a button on the remote to change the switch, allowing me to view the second half of my channels.

I know that some people reading this have experience with DirecTV, so I was looking for some feedback. I am particularly concerned with rain and stuff like that affecting the picture quality. Is there anything I should know? I am aware of the “local channel” stuff, and DirecTV offers local service in this area, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Wow… It’s now official…

I officially accepted the offer from Rovia today, sending back the letter signed and all. So I guess I am now committed to living with Massholes. :) I will make sure to watch alot of The Sopranos, however, so I don’t begin to develop some annoying accent. And also, never fear, a water fountain will never be a bubbler.

The letter said that my start date was May 1st, which I can stick to, but I will be busy these next few weeks finding an apartment and moving into it. I might live in Brighton near Adam and Rory, or perhaps somewhere else, but wherever it is, it will be near mass transit, since I don’t plan on having another car for awhile.

I am going to break Boston in right, though, by seeing a concert less than a week after I start work. :) I am going to go see Autechre at the Middle East, which I guess is actually in Cambridge, but whatever. I have been wanting to see these guys for a long time, so it will be cool to finally do so (and to see another concert, which is something I haven’t done since I saw Moby in Rochester). The concert is on May 7th, which is a Monday (odd, no?), and for those of you not in Boston, the 2 prior days they will be playing in New Jersey and NYC.

Now it becomes clear….

As I expected, today was the day of realization…..I am actually done with school. As I wake up and complete my morning e-mail checking/job-searching ritual, my friends in Rochester are beginning class. This is heavy.

Last night’s episode of The Sopranos reminded me of the first season… I think this season is shaping up well…. I am looking forward to next week. :)

Playing catch-up

The past few days have been very lazy for me… I have spent the most time working on the job hunt…

Thanks to my sister, I watched the premiere of The Sopranos at Casey’s (her boyfriend) house. The two episodes were way-cool tonight (especially due to the widescreen)…. the only cheeze factor was the lame CG they used to graft Livia’s head onto that body-double’s body. And it was pretty obvious that they were using canned lines from the prior two seasons… But that was short-lived, and given the bind they were in, they did a pretty good job of closing the Livia chapter. I am really looking forward to this season, it looks like it is going to be a good one. :) My sister and I are going to try and get HBO in the house before next Sunday, but I am pretty sure if all else fails that Casey would have me over again. :)

It is snowing pretty well here, and I am gonna shave and then finish a movie I started a little while ago now. Afterwards, a nice long slumber… :)
