Albuquerque

It seems like ages since I posted anything here, so here’s a brief recap of the trip to Albuquerque that Coco and I just got back from. Her brother, his wife, and their six children live out there, so we were out to visit them (I had never met any of them before). I don’t plan on recapping Corinna’s post, so if you are really interested check that out.

We had a pretty decent travel experience on the way out there, no delays flying, and other than a wet passenger seat in the first car they tried to stick us with, the rental went OK. We ended up with a Explorer, which was way more than we needed and was really expensive on fuel, but whatever. Her family is cool, but I’m not really used to being around so many kids. The older three kids were pretty easy to deal with, but the younger three (aged 2 and 6 month old twins) were a handful. The two year old, Max, was cute as hell but demanded much of my attention and started moping and crying if I didn’t provide it. The babies I simply don’t know what to do with, so I tried to avoid handling them. =) There’s also the reality of trying to sleep in a household with 3 young children that I haven’t had to deal with since was growing up, which was a long time ago.

We did less of the things one would normally do while on a traditional vacation, but we still had a good time. It was mostly doing things like taking the kids to the park, to the mall, and to Peter Piper Pizza (which is a scaled-down version of Chuck E. Cheese’s). As you’d probably expect, there was a tremendously creepy guy at Peter Piper’s, and I kept an eye on him the whole time I was there until he left alone… I hear that Chuck E. Cheese’s these days give kids and parents matching bracelets and no kid can leave with an adult without the same bracelet.. I think this is a good idea that Peter Piper should steal…

Corinna mentioned that Sonic has good onion rings… This is true, but the rest of their food is tremendously mediocre. The car-hop service is cutesy but stupid, and while the food is cheap, you get what you pay for. I had no idea what to tip the car hop, so I gave her a buck, which was only like 10%.

The trip back was miserable… First things first, my leg didn’t set off the metal detector on the way back either. The first leg of our trip landed a little early, but was delayed at the gate to the point where we were within 10 minutes of missing our connection.. Of course, we get off the plane to find out our connection was delayed an hour. We grab some food, board the plane an hour late, and the plane proceeds to taxi out to some remote part of O’Hare where it sits for another 45 minutes… Once in the air, we were put into a hold over Boston, further delaying our flight… After landing, getting our luggage, and taking the T back to the apartment, Corinna and I didn’t get in until after 11pm, which sucks.

My favorite animal: Pig

Went to Rochester with this weekend for Scoot’s yearly barbeque… We left Boston around 12:30pm, but thanks to traffic and other nonsense we didn’t arrive at the barbeque until around 8pm (after picking up )… The food had only been served at 7:30pm, though, so we didn’t miss out on any of the good eats. This year Scoot and company were trying to keep the number of people down as the event had become overwhelming… I didn’t see there, and there were a few other Rochestarians who I usually see only at the barbeque each year that were missing, but it was great catching up with those I did see… Corinna thought it was strange that I would drive 400 miles to a barbeque where I only knew 5-6 people, but I don’t think she understood that A) I only get to see these people once or twice a year, and 2) I really, really, really like pulled pork.

We stayed at James, Jared, and Paul’s… Jared was out of town, so he kindly offered up his room for us to use, which was much better than couch or floor surfing… After the barbeque, we returned to the house and just kind of hung out bullshitting and watching bad broadcast HDTV (the first time I really had a chance to watch HDTV for any significant amout of time)…. There was this documentary on covered bridges on PBS that was painfully boring but trapped us… Saturday morning we hit up Dibella’s for some delicious subs and then headed over to the Eastman House to check out the exhibits and take the house tour. Corinna really dug Eastman House, as I expected she would, so even if she felt bored the rest of the weekend, at least I scored some points there.. :) Saturday night we went to the Old Toad and had some food and drink before retiring with a bunch of people to the house…

Sunday we left early and on the way back stopped by my Aunt Kathy & Uncle Bob’s to visit with them and their menagerie… Both donkeys (burros, donkayas) were present, as was their blind horse who is lead around their field by the two donkey prophets. Their three legged dog (Buster, not to be confused with my parent’s dog), in addition to their more “normal” animals (two more dogs and an annoying bird) were around as well. We chatted it up with them (my Aunt & Uncle, not the animals) for a few hours, checking out my Aunt’s new Vespa and Bob’s MG (or as Corinna called it, his “buggy”). We left there around 2pm, which was FAR too late to make it back to Boston on time for the film club, so I showed up about halfway into Labyrinth (which still gave me plenty of exposure to David Bowie’s bulge).

Holiday Weekend

Travelled back to NJ this weekend to spend the holiday with family and friends, and it was a surprisingly nice trip, including very little in the department of travel headaches. and I left her office in Cambridge around 2pm on Friday and landed in Hopatcong around 7pm.. We hit a bit of traffic, including the tail end of the friday rush hour on Route 80 in NJ, but other than that it wasn’t too bad. I did get busted for speeding in lousy CT (i hate that state), but one $244 fine later (and no points on my license) means it could be worse… It’s part of the gamble of speeding…. Anyway, we spent alot of time on the boat, swimming, and playing with the dogs… came up from the dirty south, which is good because I don’t get to see my littlest sister much anymore, and now that she’s moving into the dirtier south, that situation will probably only get worse. We also caught War of the Worlds sunday afternoon which was OK, even if it did remind me how dire the theatre situation is around my hometown.

We made it back into Boston in the early evening last night, and the trip was pretty painless… We made it in four hours, and didn’t really hit any traffic… We got back in town and didn’t do much of anything, as I was whiny and tired… Corinna worked on homework and went to the store to get dinner, and at 10:30p we went up on the roof to watch the Boston fireworks, which were great.

Back in Beantown

Getting up this morning wasn’t as difficult as I had expected, I guess my sleep schedule didn’t get too wacked out in Rochester. I had a great time seeing all the CSHers again, and graduation was fun as well. My family came up for the festivities, and they seemed to enjoy getting to finally see me walk across the stage. Many thanks to all the family, house members, and friends who cheered me on as I walked across the stage. The Dean commented on the size of my cheering section as I shook his hand. :)

So that phase is now unarguably complete now; no longer can people argue that “well, you haven’t really graduated yet”… It was nice seeing everyone, but living like a nomad is always a little uncomfortable for me. I am glad to be back in my own place again. :)

Supposedly we are going to hear some “really good” news later on today, which makes me curious.. I hope it is good enough to keep me from worrying about looking at Monster for a year or so. :)

There is a new feature in the Mozilla nightly builds, the “-turbo” command line flag (Win32 only). If you pass this switch, it will start mozilla in a windowless mode, running in the background. The next time you start mozilla, it will pop up almost instantly, since it is already residing in memory. This will be a nice retort to the people that believe that Internet Explorer is so much faster because M$ pulls the browser into memory on startup (since it is “part of the OS”…)

Tired

Heading back today, good to see the people I did, but I unfortunately didn’t get to see everyone I had wanted to…. If I missed you, get in touch!

I am gonna take a shower, see jon off and help him pack anything into his car that he needs help with, and take off with Adam and Molly at 12:30p…

Sorry for all the friends-only posts the past few days, but I didn’t want to announce to the world that I was going away for the weekend after my recent break-in… After I return things will be back to normal.

I’m going back to boston, to boston, to boston

Around 2pm today I am going to leave for yet another trip to Boston, this time searching for an apartment. I tried to call some of these places yesterday, but all of them were closed for “Patriot’s Day”, which is a holiday that is only celebrated in New England, apparently (I don’t care, I will get it off next year. :P). So I have to make some calls today and set up some appointments tomorrow to look at places. I found a few that I am interested in, but I have to see if they are available now and if they are truly as cool as they looked in phosphor.

I am charging up my MP3 player’s batteries for the trip, and doing some laundry so I don’t have to be a dirtball while I am crashing at Adam and Rory’s. :)

Hell’s Yeah!

It was supposed to be out in June, but they are thinking of making a special edition out of it. If they did go the special edition route, it would probably be pushed back to the end of the year.

I wonder if Jerry realizes that Tapeheads is out on DVD already.

I find myself really pissy now that I am back in town. I guess it was the drive that got to me, although I think I might be coming down with a cold as well…

Things are good also I hear

Back from Boston now, and while was dead-on-balls about the terrible roads, it wasn’t as bad as I expected. I guess alot of it had to do with the fact that I didn’t spend much time in Boston proper… The place I was interviewing at was right next to Fenway Park (Spitting distance)….

The company seemed cool, and very small (25 employees, including execs) which is definately a bonus. I would get to work with some friends, and the work definately wouldn’t be boring (getting to work with a favorite open-source project on an intimate basis). But the big question is will they deliver the benjamin’s… I would consider the job if they will line me properly..

My MP3 player rocked on the trip too; it is nice not having to futz with cd’s or deal with the radio for the entire trip, and it ran off batteries the whole time, charging it overnight each night.

I will be more substantial later, but my brain is mush right now.
