Weird

This post from a few months ago has been getting lots of anonymous fanboy/girl comments in the past week or so.. They’ve been totally teeny-bopper incomprehensible, so I’ve just been blowing them away.. But they’ve been coming from different IP addresses, so I wonder if it got posted somewhere..

Hooray for Everything!

This weekend in Dryden at Sean & Kelly’s Halloween Bash was awesome… It was great to see everyone again and actually be able to spend some time with them… We (Me, , , , and ) rolled into town around midnight and there were already a bunch of people there… We hung out until like 4am and then drove down the street to the hotel.. The next few days were filled with tree felling (two this year, although I didn’t participate much as my anxiety took over), WiFi liberating, drunken singing and dancing, and cooking.. It was an awesome time.

Last night I caught The Dresden Dolls at Avalon.. I have been trying to see this band for years now, and every time I have had the opportunity it has been screwed up (one time I forgot about the show, a few times I’ve been travelling, etc). They did open for Nine Inch Nails earlier this year, but the sound was off and the crowd wasn’t that into them.. Plus it was a sit-down show, which was convienient at the time because I was on crutches, but a rock show shouldn’t have chairs.

Anyway, last night’s show was a blast, although I could have done without some of the opening acts…. The Dolls rocked the house, playing old and new material and a bunch of covers. Amanda even played drums while Brian played guitar for a cover of “I Love Rock & Roll” by Joan Jett. The new songs were great, and I’m looking forward to their new album, whenever that comes out. The highlight of the night, however, was their encore, when they came out dressed as The White Stripes.. Amanda was dressed as Jack White and Brian as Meg White and they played “My Doorbell”… It was hysterical… I left before the encores were done as it was getting close to last call on the subway, but it was a great night out..

Halloween Party 2005 Trip Playlist

Here’s what we listened to on the trip to and from Dryden, NY this weekend. We assembled this on the iPod in the car.. I selected most of the songs, and when I was driving on the last leg of the return trip took over (His choices start with “Paul Revere”)..

Busy Month

This month is completely cracked out…. First off, tomorrow and I are going to the 2005 Ig Nobel Awards Ceremony at Harvard… Then on Friday, we are going with and Myers to see Stephen Lynch at the Orpheum. I am also seeing Henry Rollins do Spoken Word stuff on the 18th, I have the usual Halloween Festivities at the end of the month, and then on Halloween Day I’m going to the Dresden Dolls show..

Homosapiens have outgrown their use

Open request to Massachusetts: Fucking finish Route 3 already… The road is completely paved, the lines are painted, and the ramps have been renovated… What the shit are you still working on?

I’m finally shifting further into the “new stuff” here at work… My new cubicle is awesome… It’s a little bigger than usual (it’s at the end of a row, so I got the leftovers) and I’m in a row with all the CAD guys, so the lights above my cube are all turned off… I am not a big fan of fluorescent tubes, so this is a good thing… In addition to the lack of overhead light, this cave is in the middle of the building, so I get no windows either… I have mixed feelings about this… On one hand, I hate glare, OTOH, I have no idea what’s going on outside… There’s going to be a lot of upfront design and documentation to take care of before any code is written (or at least, any non-prototype code).

The aforementioned accident was no big deal… I tapped someone’s passenger side doors, nobody was hurt, and my car only got scraped up a bit… I was stopped at a stop sign, looked left and right, moved forward, and a car I didn’t see was moving in front of me from the left… I haven’t actually heard from the lady yet, she mentioned she was going to be out of town for awhile… Not sure if insurance is going to be involved, she said she would get an estimate first… It was a shitty way to start the Labor Day weekend, though… Other than the bad start, the trip was great… We didn’t hit traffic in either direction, and the weather was great.

CSH Welcome Back Weekend was a ton of fun… Met tons of new people and caught up with lots of old friends. Had far too much to drink Friday night (turns out I was correct to avoid Everclear all these years), enjoyed the picnic on Saturday once we finally figured out when it was, had great food all weekend, and perhaps signifying a trend, we didn’t encounter traffic in either direction. Even made it back in time for the Sunday Night Film Club’s screening of “Le Monde du Silence (The Silent World)”, which was surprisingly amazing… I was never into the Cousteau stuff when I was a kid, but this was really entertaining..

Ok, enough effluvia… This album (Busdriver’s “Fear of a Black Tangent”) is really good, you should check it out…

Further Random Bullshit

Oh Bloodhound Gang, why must your tour hit Boston on the Friday before Halloween, when I assume I will be in Ithaca? That is simply uncool. Complex mathematics are now required.

Further musings on Albuquerque:

  • “It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity” has been proven as fundamental bullshit. Dry heat just sucks differently.
  • If tons of people tell you before your trip to Albuquerque that “you have to visit Santa Fe”, don’t believe them (unless you are into buying art at small galleries).
  • I was pretty unimpressed by the so-called Miracle Staircase. Sure you recently added the supports for stability.
  • Why would anyone choose to live in the desert? I mean, when I leave my house in NJ or my apartment in MA I don’t concern myself with which poisonous animal may be along my path.
  • Sorry, kids, I actually don’t want to play any more board games.

Today I finally fixed the windowsill in the bathroom… There was this 1/2″ gap between the window itself and the sill which collected water and other nasties.. We have tried to fill it with various substances (spackle, grout, caulk) to no avail, so I hand-carved a small piece of wood to fit in there today to fill the gap, scraped all the paint, caulk, and other crap off of the sill and out of the gap, and repainted the whole thing with outdoor paint. Hopefully it won’t get so nasty anymore… I am skeptical, though.

Resurrection coming in stereo

I saw Murderball, a documentary about Olympic Quad Rugby, on Sunday with the film club. Now I knew nothing about Olympic Quad Rugby (a.k.a. Murderball; a.k.a. Paralympic Quadriplegic Rugby) going into the film, but it seems to me that after this film this sport will be much more widely known. The sport is intense, and the players literally beat the shit out of each other and their chairs. It’s like rugby, but instead of using shoulders and elbows to take out the carrier, you use a big metal chair as fast as you can get it going. I think we are trained by culture to think of quadriplegic people as helpless, but this film will literally rewrite your definition of even what the word ‘quadriplegic’ means.

The movie focuses mostly on two people, Mark Zupan, a player for the USA Paralympic Rugby team and Joe Soares, a former player for Team USA who was dropped from the team and now coaches Team Canada. The bitter rivalry between the two teams is perfectly captured, both with the “action” scenes as well as some scenes where Soares is referred to as a traitor. The soundtrack is pretty good too, with several of the game action scenes backed by Ministry which I still have a soft spot for (by “soft spot” I actually mean “whips me into a frenzy”). Anyway, enough babbling, go see this movie.

iTunes 4.9

I have been listening to a few different podcasts for awhile now, but the overall workflow of getting them onto my iPod has always been annoying. First of all, there was lots of software to automatically download podcasts, but none of them seemed to have the ability to get the file onto my iPod (and remove it once it’s been listened to). Some of them could add the tracks to my iTunes library, but since I have too much music to make much out of the “Library Syncing” in iTunes, this didn’t really accomplish much for me. Enter iTunes 4.9, which makes the whole process much more bearable. First of all, it provides a whole new top-level category in iTunes which makes it very easy to find my podcasts. Second, and most importantly, it can sync podcasts to my iPod seperately from everything else, so all I have to do is connect my iPod to my computer and everything else is taken care of for me.

There are a few annoyances, though. First of all, I have set iTunes to delete podcasts I’ve listened to off the iPod. Unfortunately, their interpretation of “listened to” really equates to “began listening to”, and if you play the first second of a file, it marks it as played and deletes it the next time you sync. Also, my iPod has been locking up lately, as it did before, requiring a hard reset (which loses my current position in what I was listening to in the process). Those issues aside, this had made the whole podcasting experience for me far more bearable.

And just in case you are interested in what podcasts I’m listening to:
