Pondering

Anyone know why I couldn’t get to the entire CSH subnet for a few hours tonight? I was able to get to Grace, but I couldn’t get to any machine on floor (including my own). I was thinking it was some kind of power-outage in the building but my uptime disagrees. Was there some kind of planned RIT maintenance I missed out on?

The Birdcage sucks.

Ok, I like Robin Williams, but that movie blows. My sister, Larissa, and my Mom are currently watching it. Fortunately, life in the dorms have built up my ability to ignore irritations, so…

This break has been great so far… I haven’t done much of anything… Last night I stayed up until about 2:30am hacking on Drink and talking to Chris which was cool. I woke up at 2pm this afternoon (I almost hit 12 hours)… I guess I am catching on all the lost sleep I accrued this past quarter. I found out that I got an ‘A’ in my Operating Systems II course, which is exciting, because our whole team worked our tails off all quarter.

Chuck came over today and we just chilled, and ended up going for a little ride to the Rockaway Mall and Barnes and Noble… Ran into a girl from High School who I hadn’t seen in a few moons…

Bill Kuker hooked me up with his API for the drink hardware today, so I might work on finalizing that work up today. Most of the server is done, but I have simple stubs in the places where I needed to interact with the hardware.

Wow…

Yeah, being home is fun…. I have been chilling with the family, which is cool. My youngest sister Aimee doesn’t return from school until Tuesday, but Larissa is home…. Everyone has a decent amount of time off this weekend, so…

I hacked more on the new server for drink today…. I had some ideas in the car (some inspired by Jon) that I implemented earlier today. Originally my code had it’s own authentication database, but now I authenticate against the house’s db. Only the account balances are kept in the server’s own db now, and once the RTP’s get LDAP kicking on the house’s machines, I can get rid of that too.

my armpits burn a bit

Yeah, it’s 5am, but our FileSystem supports files larger than 4k now…. :) I just finished up indirect inodes, so our max filesize is now limited by the size of the disk (128k).

I am working in the User Center here at CSH, so Jon doesn’t have to put up with my typing and changes in light as I switch workspaces on my desktop… All of the workstations here decided that it was time to start their cron jobs, so for awhile it was a cool little surround hard-disk crunching effect.. :)

One virtual page at a time…..

So, since I have barely had time to breathe the past few days, I figured it was time for an update. As many of you who see me often know, the past few days have really been hectic for me. As I stated in Thursday’s update, just cause your busy doesn’t mean you aren’t enjoying yourself…

So Friday was fun, Ryan and I spent most of the time between 11pm and 8am (yes, 8am) working on our VM code and page switching and swapping. He was working mostly on the swapping stuff, and I was working on scheduler modifications. We felt somewhat good when we packed it in at 8am, but unfortunately we had a group meeting in the CS Labs at noon. Only getting 3 hours of sleep was a bitch, but staying in the labs without food until 7pm was a queen bitch. At 7pm, Ryan and I returned to CSH and Jeff and Rob went home. We were all totally fried… Fortunately Ethan had some leftover pizza that he offered me so I didn’t have to go far for food. After that, I crashed for a few hours (until about 11pm). I had a bit of trouble sleeping, moslty due to my wack schedule, so I went into the lounge where a few house members had set up the LCD projector, a DTS 5.1 Digital setup and were watching U-571, which I hadn’t seen. It didn’t suck, and afterwards I had no trouble falling asleep. Did I mention I was pretty deep into a coughing illness at this point?

Sunday I woke up at 12pm, and we had a 1pm meeting in the CS labs, but I felt pretty well rested. Then Chris called wanting to talk, and I said “But I don’t have the time!”, and she asked “Did you remember to set your clock back?” Thanks to her, I now realized I had an extra hour, which afforded me the time to to grab some lunch at Schaller’s, and stop by Media Play to pick up the Rocky Horror DVD (which I think I have earned the past few days.. :P). I showed up at the labs a bit early and we stayed there coding until around 10pm… I went home and started working on my Data Comm project, which I finished around 4am (but I was watching Rocky with and without commentary in the background, so the amount of time is kinda irrelevant).

Today we met at the labs around 3pm, and we stayed there until my class at 8pm, stopping for food in the middle somewhere….

Tomorrow, I have a quiz in Prob and Stat tomorrow and we meet in the labs one last time to work out any outstanding bugs and submit our code. Man… That class is alot of work, but it rocks…

Hmmm

“Burning Down the House” is on the radio, and like, it sounds strange. My Roommate, Jon Parise and I were trying to figure out what was wrong with it. At first, it sounded like it was running about 10% faster than it should be, but then Jon pointed out that while the vocals were weird, the song was musically right. So we agreed that it is probably a different vocal effect on the radio edit.

The planetarium was fun last night, and afterwards we got to climb the 60 stairs to the observatory atop the Science Center. Unfortunately, the center is VERY close to the (spoiled) heart of Rochester, so there was alot of light pollution, which sucked.

After the planetarium, we came back to the dorms and watched my new Pulp Fiction DVD. It is the canadian version of the DVD, which has a deleted scenes reel that the US version lacks. Via mail-order, they were the same price, so it was a no-brainer.

Recently CSH voted to ask 3 professors to become advisors, and they all accepted. 2 of them, along with one of our existing advisors, are coming up on floor for dinner and a house meeting…. Should be groovy.

Phew

Been a super-busy weekend… I am starting to look forward to the time after Halloween… As you readers are probably aware of, we have a big demo around Halloween at work, and all the scrambling I have been doing recently has been to prepare for that. I am probably going to avoid work a bit after that demo…. I wouldn’t quite say I am completely over-extended right now, but I look forward to a minimum of free-time.

Time for the house meeting!

Over the hump

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are my really packed days…. All those days I have class from 1-4, then from 8-10. Add in all the CSH stuff, then meals, and the days can seem really long.

Thursday and Friday, however, are rather light for me. I would like to be working today, but I have alot of homework and project work I need to scrub before I can do work-work. I will say though, it is nice to be taking classes that require real code again…. The last time I had that was last fall.

No matter how much technology you add, laundry still sucks

Woke up early this morning to take care of a load or two of laundry. This weekend was super-fly, with the CSH Welcome-Back party and all. Friday night I went to Nick’s for the first time. Now, I had eaten Nick’s many, many, times in the past, but this was the first time that I actually ventured out there… It was amazing. :)

Every time I hear this song, I think of the Kids in the Hall. I wonder why? :)
