Still Alive

I know most of you will be looking for a more substantial update as to my condition, but that will have to wait… Here’s the short version (more details to come):

I broke my leg/knee really bad skiing on Saturday… I needed surgery on Sunday to rebuild my leg, which was successful. I just got home from the hospital a little while ago thanks to , , . I’m going to be stuck here for a few weeks, maybe returning to work half-days starting in like 2 weeks. I won’t be able to drive or put any weight on my right leg for like 8 weeks. Again, more details to come once I settle in a bit.

Thanks to everyone for their awesome support, especially my folks, the aforementioned, and , Scott, Mike, and everyone else I’m forgetting… Time for some rest, and I’ll be back with more later.

Cuz It’s Hot

Tons of exciting news lately! In celebration of my recent financial victory, I treated myself to something I’ve wanted for a long time: a 15″ Powerbook G4 (1.67GHz, 1G RAM, 100G Disk, 128M VRAM)! I picked it up at the Apple Store on Wednesday and it is awesome… I am going to be donating my old Powermac G4, a.k.a. Carlos, to CSH next time I head out there for them to use as a user machine (I figured it will make a nice workstation for general use as well as for video editing). I figure I got it for free from Rovia, I might as well spread the love.

My sister sent me an email announcing that the Ledgewood White Castle opened last night! (, it is where the old Fireside Diner used to be on Rt. 46). I was already planning on heading back some time in the upcoming weekends, but now the desire is even stronger. :) It won’t be happening this weekend, but maybe next?

I think I am going skiing this weekend with and , but the trip has been very nebulous so far… :) I am going to cut out of work early today as I have a bit of an overtime bank this week.. I need to do laundry before I can trek up to NH. I also have to try and scam NIN tickets at 5pm today, so I probably won’t leave until that is squared away.

Snow and Linux

Based on some conversations at work today (not to mention LinuxWorld) I
was inspired to (once again) install Linux on my PC at home. I’ve been on
the edge of doing so for awhile now, and I’ve been itching to do some
non-work coding, so I figured I would take some time tonight and get things
rolling. I am installing Gentoo 2004.3 from the ground up (Stage 1), so
it’s slow going even on my crazy, balls-out, PC. But I like Gentoo,
especially since their package management retains the spirit of BSD Ports.
Even said she was excited to check out Linux since
she’s never used it, although we’ll see how much she likes it, as she seems
resistant to UI change. :P

Looking out the window tonight I realize that I really love the
winter.

Nice.

I should get one of these for my car.  Speaking of cars, I helped handle his car situation this evening…  Well, not fully handled, he picks it up after work tomorrow, so we will carpool for at least one more day.  After the dealership we went to Imperial Pizza for delicious, delicious pizza.

Slacker

My trip to CA was cancelled, looks like it is going to be overcast on Thursday in Palmdale, so it isn’t worth much running a flight test out there. Nothing terribly interesting has been happening lately, at least nothing worth writing about here..

Pizza Craziness

I have lived in Boston for damn near 4 years now, and this entire time I have suffered the poison that the locals call Pizza, which is wholly and entirely seperate from what we call Pizza back home. So it boggles my mind that after all this time, I find not one, but two actually, honest-to-goodness, REAL pizzarias right under my nose! The first is Imperial Pizza in Brighton, and the second Little Stevie’s over by Berkeley and Hynes Convention Center, both of which had really decent pizza!

I’m going to be back in Palmdale next week. The bonus is that my return flight on Friday is First Class!

LinuxWorld

LinuxWorld was lame.  It was this really uncomfortable non-consentual sex act between geeks and suits.  Each group seemed to have serious resentment of the other.  On top of that, the exhibitors were simply boring.  I did have a very nice and interesting conversation with the guys manning the ReactOS booth, definitely piqued my interest, but other than that, it was pretty much a waste of time.  Actually, beyond that, it was plain boring.

I did run into , however, which was an unexpected surprise…  I haven’t seen him for like 6 years or something…  I met a bunch of his coworkers and we caught up.  While I wouldn’t say it’s that strange to meet a CSHer at LinuxWorld, it was still a bit of a surprise.
