First Night in the New Place

grahams - - 2 mins read

Last night was a long, long night… Left work with Adam, and went with him back to his apartment to help him move out what was left of his stuff.. We got to the new place around 6 and moved all his crap in… When I got up to my room upstairs I was kinda pissed, because the shower door wasn’t installed yet and there was still paint scaffolding and dirt all over the floor… I went downstairs to start unpacking the kitchen and the Landlord (Bill) showed up and said “I came to clean up the upstairs room, sorry that scaffolding is still there”… I breathed a sigh of relief…. He said that the shower door was being installed today, as well as the window treatments and microwave… This makes me happier… :)

We did a bit of work trying to get the network working but Adam got frustrated… It appears that there is no data run up to my bedroom, which sucks, but the telephone up there works, and it is run over Cat5 so worst-case we can disconnect the phone in that room and use it for Ethernet instead. We will figure all that shit out this weekend.

You may look at the time of this posting and say to yourself “Self? Why is Sean up so early!?!?!”. Well, the contractors were coming early to finish up the apartment, so I just wanted to get out of there before they had the chance to wake me up. :) I was out of the house by 8am and at work by 8:15a… (Thank you new commute).

My body is rejecting all this new found physical exertion like a transplanted kidney…

Update: Just to avoid confusion and violent outbreaks of mass hysteria, fear not, I did shower this morning.. :) I just had to make the LONG trip down to the 2nd floor…

Everyone I Went to High School With is Dead

Another summer rolls by And I can’t help but feel pain All those familiar faces Come back to haunt me again Whether I hated their guts Or hardly knew them at all I always felt far away Beside them there in the halls

My yearbook keeps me informed My yearbook keeps me in line Its an obituary Gives me a concept of time We’ve graduated and grown From a real world once our own Yet we have proven them wrong By dropping off all along

Ugh.

I just want to go home and set up my room. I hope my shower is finished before I get there. :)

Money

So I waited for AT&T to install the cable this morning from 9-11 (when they said they were going to be there) and they never showed up. I called them when I got to work at 11:30a and they gave me a \$20 credit… I told them to go to the house anyway and one of the construction workers would let them in.

While I was waiting, however, I had the opportunity to talk to the electrician (who’s name is John… Always know your electrician by name) about the wiring in the house. He confirmed that there is Cat-5e to every room, and showed me the closet in which it all ran to (heretofore referred to as the “wiring closet”). None of the cable is terminated at either end, but that is fine with us. Adam and I went to Active Electronics over lunch and picked up a 12-port patch panel, 5 dual wall plates, and 5 RJ-45 inserts… They were out of RJ-11 inserts, but who cares about the phone… :P We will order them online and have them in a few days..

So Adam is going to punch everything down tonight after he gets back from picking up Helen… I am glad I don’t have to deal with that crap, because it drives me crazy. :P

The apartment is still a little rough… When I left at 11a this morning the glass door for my shower upstairs had yet to be installed… And there is no hardware on the cabinet doors in the kitchen.. There is also painting scaffold in my bedroom still, but I doubt that will be there tonight (at least, it had better not be.. :P). Regardless, I am certain I will at least be able to set my boxspring and mattress on the floor and get a good night’s sleep tonight.

Moving

It’s hard for me to verbalize how exhausted I am… All of the big stuff (desk, dresser, bed, most of the boxes) are in the new place, so I will only have a carload or two with my parents this weekend. I am going to call them in a few minutes, then I am gonna lay down, probably falling asleep for the night… Everything hurts.

When I got back to the apartment, however, I got the lovage companion CD that I ordered from 75ark a few months ago… It was free, but I had to pay S/H. I haven’t checked it out yet

The new place is still awesome, but while there is cat5e in the walls, there is no punchdown/patch panel, nor are there any jacks in the rooms… I will let adam deal with that shit. (unless a certain someone wants to haul ass down from Syracuse to do it.. ;)

In case you were wondering, packing still sucks

grahams - - 1 min read

I am probably 95% packed now… I updated my “note to self” from earlier and struck out the things that are done… These have taken me most of the night so far, but I have the kitchen entirely packed, all of my clothes packed (and the dresser emptied)… I powered off my fileserver (placing my trust in ReiserFS, I just pulled the plug :P) and removed the dsl router from the picture (so my workstation is connected directly to the “modem”).

Adam and I are picking up the keys tomorrow and moving our stuff there, but the landlord said that he doesn’t want us sleeping there tomorrow night (apparently they will be rushing the last few things that need to be finished up). So I won’t be able to sleep there until thursday, and I will be sleeping on the floor in an empty apartment tomorrow night. :)

Back to packing, hopefully I can finish the majority of whats left tonight, but if it gets too late I have to stop making noise. :)

Hehehehehehe

A few months back, in our old office, Rovia was taking some promo shots of our CEO, Andres, for various publications… When he wasn’t looking, I snuck my Timmy doll into the picture… Well, apparently that photo finally made it into a magazine… You can see an online copy of the article here. Look for Timmy in the upper left-hand corner (he was on top of my monitor).

That’s freaking funny… :P

A state of exhaust

I am really freaking tired today… I was up late packing up my shit, and I am still not done… To be fair to myself, though, I am approaching done.. I removed the 4 speakers from the wall and spackled/sanded the mounting holes. I disassembled my stereo and extracted the cable mess that kept it alive. Right now the only A/V equipment hooked up is the TiVo and the TV. I might leave the TiVo there until Wednesday night so I can record Good Eats… I am still uncertain if my cable will be turned on any time soon in the new place, so I figure I will hedge my bets.. :) Time for a little “note to self” action:

  • Find and pack all the various lamps and shit Disassemble Kitchen Table. 8 bolts, no problem. Disassemble Computer Desk. Lots of weird pieces, most likely will be a big bitch Take a break to watch Battlebots, as a distraction from packing, to avoid going insane and bashing my head into the dirt Pack up the bathroom (at least the essential toiletries) Possibly disassemble the bed frame tonight and put the boxspring and mattress on the floor for the night… I very well might be far too lazy to do this
  • Empty dresser into garbage bags. Unmount mirror from dresser and wrap it carefully in comforter, to avoid creating shards of glass.
  • Finish packing up vital kitchen bits… mostly flatware and chemicals
  • Pack all the clothes on hangers in the closet..
  • Talk to Adam and see what the gameplan is for tomorrow

So that’s that. My parents are still coming up this weekend, and so if I just get tired of moving shit tomorrow I could just leave stuff until then.. I am just going to try to get a few of the big things moved tomorrow (at a minimum) so I can hopefully sleep in the new place for the rest of the week… If I end up moving everything tomorrow, well, then my parents can just come up and help me settle in and hang out without needing to schlep. I doubt they will mind. :)

DVD

I am going to make a DVD with non-interactive menus, just so I can list it on the “Features List”. I mean, really, no shit the DVD has interactive menus, really, what use would non-interactive menus be? The word menu IMPLIES interactive, so get rid of the extra word! Do they really think that we might buy a DVD and see a “menu” ala a restaurant, that just pops up before the DVD plays to tell you what’s on the disc, and then starts playing the movie???
