Let’s Pretend We’re Bunny Rabbits

I want to go back to bed…. I was woken up by street work and jackhammers at 7am…

Our fucking firewall/file server has been locking up every week or so for no apparent reason and it happened again last night. What really sucks is that the network closet is in Adam’s room, so i can’t fix the problem unless he is awake… I wish I knew what was wrong… Any linux experts have similar problems?

    1. Dual p2-350s, heat has never been a problem before and doesn’t seem to be now…

      256 megs of like PC-100 or something…

      The logs:

      1. I’ve seen this happen when using el-cheapo ethernet cards. The problem usually occurs when the traffic load increases suddenly.

        1. Interesting…

          eth0 is a 3c905 and eth1 is:

          eth1: RealTek RTL8139 Fast Ethernet at 0xd080d000, 00:02:2a:c2:0c:2f, IRQ 10
          eth1: Identified 8139 chip type ‘RTL-8139C’

          Is that el-cheapo enough? =)

          1. Maybe. I’ve seen it a lot on my SMC (DEC Tulip driver) cards, but never on the Intel 10/100 Pro’s. Interesting that error came as DHCP was acking. Maybe dhcpd is broken???

Do you run Samba on the box?

I believe that dhcpd is a red herring, it services requests for days without issue, and without leaking memory, so I find it hard to believe that it would be the problem.

Do you run Samba on the box?

              Yes, why do you ask?

              1. Cause I run samba, and can duplicate a network lock-up by moving a large files to my samba share. The machine doesn’t crash most of the time, so a simple ifdown/ifup along with reapplying my iptables rules solves the problem. Just wondering if you’ve seen anything similar?

                1. No, I haven’t seen that…. My crashes are system halts (as you can see from the logs) and I actually move a ton of large files across samba when I edit episodes of Good Eats for my archive.. The raw MPEG2 for each episode is around 1.2G and I distill that into 4 chunks of 32MB DivX (I cut out the commercials, so I end up with 4 chunks) and then ultimately into one large ~150M DivX file.. I haven’t seen what you describe in doing any of that.

              1. I think I have these: these.

I’m not 100% sure it’ll fix the problem. That dhcpd error is starting to bother me. I’d wait until the problem happens again to see if dhcp is somehow causing it.

    1. sorry, that was me packeting you. i’ll stop now.

      Thanks.

why does adam get the network closet in his room? that seems unfair. =)

It just so worked out that all of the cat5 ran into a closet in his room… Since the cat5 was there when we moved in, it didn’t make sense to move it…

    1. I just patched to 2.4.18 and am building it now, hmmm, should I just install and reboot remotely or should I wait until I am at the box…… I know which is more responsible, but I also know which is more fun. =)

I upgraded my dhcpd while I was at it too…

          1. Not using the SuSE kernel? There’s like 10MB of changes that the SuSE kernel adds. You can just grab the kernel RPM from 8.0 (now on the FTP server) and install it if you like.

            1. I didn’t even know there was a SuSE kernel… Don’t forget that I try to avoid Linux as much as possible. =)

That machine is running 7.3, not 8.0… Do they distribute source or only binaries?
