I was encoding Einstürzende Neubauten’s “Strategies Against Architecture III” and when I looked it up on freedb the original submitter filed it under the “Pop” genre. This amuses me greatly.

I -always- fuck with ID3 submissions… esp. for people I know… my favorites are to submit something as easy listening or folk…
I’ve done this with a few Coil cd’s too… :)
Urgh. It’s one of my pet peeves too. The great majority are misfiled genre-wise, IMO.
It’s never really bothered me because I never really care about the Genre of the music, nor do I ever really agree with the choices…. I am still an album listener…
Don’t you ever just want to quickly pull up all of your ambient, or all your metal, or all your jazz, etc.? Mood and genre are vey much attached for me. I’m as likely to want to pull up a genre as I am to pull up an album. To me, this is the power and flexibility of MP3s – otherwise may as well stick to CDs (well, except for portability).
Hehehehe…. I knew this was a sensitive issue for you…. No, surprisingly enough, I never want any of that…
To me, MP3’s are just more convienient CDs, or tapes, or albums…. My listening patterns haven’t changed because of MP3, and I still think of albums, and not genres…. I never feel the need to listen to a random selection of my Jazz… Instead, I will pick a few albums and toss them in a playlist (never random) or I will build a custom playlist on the fly…
Interesting how the same technologies and capabilities mean such different things to different people. Amy’s not into MP3s but she hears what I’m playing and recently called from the other room, “Don’t you ever listen to complete albums anymore?” Hmm… maybe my listening habits have been changed more than I thought they had.
I should not forget that an album is a complete work of art.
But damn, random shuffle is just so much fun. I never tire of being flogged from Shostakovich to Sex Pistols in half a second… must be the collagist in me.

See, when I don’t listen to complete albums I end up listening to “Manual Shuffle” where I assemble a bunch of tracks manually into a playlist, usually in no particular order but I try to keep those fun transitions (like you describe) there…. I guess that’s just the “mix tape guy” in me… :)
