Strategies Against Architecture

I was privliged to see Einsturzende Neubauten at the Paradise Rock Club last night. Adam had an extra ticket for the show and told me about it a few weeks ago, I hadn’t even heard about it… Man was the show incredible.. No opening act, and EN played for about 3 hours… It is one thing to listen to their recordings, but to see them create this music live, it’s mindboggling.. The creativity in their constructed instruments, and the pure beauty they wring out of objects normally not associated with things musical…. It was truly awe-inspiring…. And Blixa mentioned that this tour might be the last time they can play the states, as the record industry as well as Clear Channel, combined with the weakness of the dollar compared to the Euro is making it really tough for them to be able to afford to play here..

I sponsored the band in 2003, and for that I got a beautiful “supporters’ CD”, which came in great packaging with a real nice poster. I hadn’t sponsored them for 2004, but now that I have a job perhaps I will in a few paychecks…

This move at Goodrich (from Lexington to Chelmsford) is pretty disruptive… It seems that my cube isn’t being moved today after all and I will be moving with everyone else next Friday. Which is a good thing because I already have two meetings scheduled here in Lexington for next week and driving back and forth between the offices doesn’t sound like too much fun.

Five Years

My throat really isn’t sore anymore but my head is now a solid block of snot. On to actual journal-y type stuff:

After work yesterday I drove straight to Cambridge to meet up with Adam and Rory at their apartment. We waited around for awhile until Flip showed up. He was in town for an IEEE conference (that I probably should have heard about/gone to) and wanted to get together with some CSHers. We took him to Bartley’s for the finest burger ever crafted in a restaurant, and explained to him that in Massachusetts a Milkshake is called a Frappe. Rory was illin’ (read: being a big pussy) so he didn’t come along. But afterwards all of us went to Herrell’s in Harvard Square for some fantastic Ice Cream… We sat in the vault (it’s a reformed bank, so they have tables in the old vault) and just chilled out. It turns out that by coincidence my visit with them was timed with the return to the US of , who was getting in some time after 10pm. So while I wasn’t planning on staying that late, I really needed to hang out until Matt arrived so he could regale us with tales from his month-long trip to New Zealand.

It was really hot (80+) and muggy last night, so we just kind of hung out in A & R’s apartment trying not to move much. Matt arrived a bit after 11pm, and I hung out for like 90 minutes listening to his Xtreme stories…. It makes me want to travel, but I don’t think that is going to happen much this year.

I still feel like shit, but at least now my throat isn’t paralyzingly painful… I am progressing into the coughing and congestion phase of “The Ninja”.

The Ninja

I am coming down with a cold. So far I have a sore throat, hopefully it will stop there short of the mega-congestion fest I always seem to end up with for a month after getting a cold… So far I am able to work, but if it becomes a problem I might bail, we’ll see.

Lewking it Up

At the Fall FUMN, begged me to let him in on the secret evil roster of films to be screened that night… After swearing him to secrecy, I told him. Apparently, I am a retard, because Luke waited like 5 minutes to spill the beans to Resig. From then on, Luke’s act of complete unreliablilty became “Luke’ing it”.

This weekend, however, as supreme overlord of lingusitics, I decided that “Luke’ing It” had developed a second, “meta-verb” definition, now describing “when someone does something so completely, unbelievably inane that their name becomes synonymous with that act”.

My Weekend in Rochester

I left for Rochester with tlund directly from the Burlington Mall, where we grabbed lunch with a bunch of people from work. We cruised to Rochester and arrived around 5:30pm, making pretty good time. The trip went pretty fast, Lund DJ’ing the iPod for the first hour or two and then just playing a bunch of Guns N’ Roses for the last part of the trip. Went directly up to CSH after dropping Lund off at Colony, and just hung out for an hour or two. Assembled the crew to go to the Dinosaur BBQ, and it was Me, Shotty, Tom, and Eric. I amazed the populous with my complete inability to remember people’s names. The Dino was awesome as always, Midgetor and myself split the Big Shot “Dinner for Two”, which was awesome. We then went back to floor for a bit and ultimately to Jordan’s surprise birthday party (but we came in well after the reveal). After an hour or so at the party I was feeling pretty old and tired so I headed back to floor to crash on and dan_lee’s couch… It isn’t terribly comfortable, but it did the trick without paralyzing me.

Saturday at noon a bunch of us headed to DiBella’s, which was good, but I bungled my order and forgot to ask for Spicy Mustard in place of Yellow Mustard… I would have enjoyed my sandwich much more with the Spicy. Rhubarb and I then broke off to collect the various movies for Fucked Up Movie Night. Back on floor, Jared and Joe came up to hang out and we had a little ad-hoc alumni worship, er, storytelling fiesta. Jared got hungry so we zoomed over to MacGregors to sneak in a meal before FUMN. Ben LePlant joined us and I harassed him about coming to work for Goodrich.

FUMN ruled… We had a Nick’s run after the second movie, which pushed the schedule around and prevented a 5th movie, but it was a “re-run” from 6 years ago anyway, so I left it as the last movie just for that reason. I showed:

  1. Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy
  2. Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger 4
  3. Capturing the Friedmans
  4. Caligula (Unrated)

All the films seemed to be hits, although people were pretty tired by the time we got to the last one… It ended at 5am which is why I decided to call it quits before the 5th film.

The trip back was pretty good, without hitting any real traffic or anything on the way back… Kill Bill Vol. 2 was great, some people felt that it wasn’t as good as the first, but I think I at least liked it equally, if not a little more.
