Deja-vu

I failed yet again to install FreeBSD 4.4 on my old machine…. When 4.4 was released I tried to do it and failed, and I repeated the action again tonight. The problem is that when I boot off the ISO the boot hangs after loading the plip driver (which I don’t even need)… I guess I could look around for other people who had this problem, but I don’t know if I want to bother anymore… I have an installation of an earlier version that works, and it is fairly secure IMHO… I will probably just leave it until I have some more patience and a case for the machine. :)

The earliest post I made to Usenet was made on 13 Jun 1994 to alt.music.queen… All of those posts make me look like an idiot… Especially the ones to alt.fan.oj-simpson… I take no responsibility for my feeblish tendencies in my youth…

I've begged, stolen, and borrowed

This god-damned dialog box won’t go modal for me… The motherless bastard is simply mocking me now…

I guess I haven't lost my OS skillz

I got the machine up and running, and after fighting with Samba and my lack of knowledge of FreeBSD everything seems to be working well… I will set up NFS tomorrow just for completeness… Right now I am purging my old Win98 partition of all the “this is a boot” drive stuff that is no longer necessary, as well as data that has become duplicated or unnecessary…

As you can no doubt see from the time of this posting it is very late, and I am definately going to regret staying up this late in the morning…. Oh well, It’s nice to go back into computer dork-out mode on occasion… :)

Ugh...

I had forgotten how long CVSuping takes when you haven’t bothered to do so in a long time… =)

Networking and stuff

My ram works and all is well in the world…. :)

I got tired of not having any disk space so I bought a power supply and set up my old machine on my dresser for the time being until I get a case for it. My new machine doesn’t have any SCSI controllers since I am kinda giving up on SCSI for the desktop/workstation, but that left me without any way to use the 18 GB U2W drive that I used with the old motherboard…. So now I am in the process of setting up a FreeBSD file server doing SMB and NFS… I borrowed a linksys DSL “router” that we aren’t using anymore at work (yeah, they are shitty, but it is functional enough), and after some configuration hassles I finally have the machine booting and on the network.

Now to configure Samba…

Grumble...

So when I am not here, the UPS guy comes for delivery at 10:30a, and when I am here, he takes his sweet time…. I am still waiting, and this is getting really frustrating…

Jesus was a carpenter previous to his career as a prophet

Last night was a long night, and I don’t quite understand why I woke up at 9:30, but whatever… I probably won’t stay up so late tonight, which is a good thing…. I have to go to work a bit late tomorrow, I am receiving a package worth \$50 that the sender decided was worthy of “Signature Required in Person” status, which is totally frustrating, because there is never anyone here during the day. I can understand if the package was worth a few hundred dollars, but \$50?!?!

I went to the hardware store today to score a few mouse traps and also get the equipment necessary to fix my recliner once and for all… During my original move here, the chair got banged around and one of the rivets snapped… I had tried many hackish methods of trying to fix it, but today I had to take the entire recline-arm assembly out and replace the snapped rivet with a bolt (I tried a pop-rivet, but it didn’t work quite right). In the process, I found another rivet that was in pretty rough shape, so I replaced that while I was at it too… It is all pretty solid now, but it is still a pretty crappy chair. :) I got to be a carpenter for the day though, which was fun. :)

Today I rented SSX Tricky and a few days ago I rented Wave Race: Blue Storm… Wave Race sucks total donkey nuts… It simply isn’t fun whatsoever… SSX is fun, but I suck just as badly at it on the GameCube as I did playing it on the PS2 over Adam’s… I have it until Thursday, though, so I will keep playing it and maybe I will get better..

I feel better today, my throat isn’t completely irritated and my headache has gone away. Hopefully after another good night’s sleep I will feel in the range of 100%. I talked to for awhile tonight, which was cool, but she had to finish some shopping and get back to studying, so we didn’t get to talk much…. Seems to be the usual these days, but that’s OK, cuz I know how important this test is to her… I just hope her life will return to normal after the test and we can talk a bit more regularly again….

Fun, Fun, Fun

Just got back from a party at Adam, Rory, and Frances’ place (even though frances doesn’t live there anymore) and it was quite fun… After awhile, though, it kinda got beat being one of the few sober people. Frances and I ruled at Trivial Pursuit.. Tonight is the first real snowstorm this winter, and so far the accumulation is about 2 inches (rough guess). Hopefully it will snow through morning….

I left work early today...

…I had a headache and simply wanted to sleep, so that’s what I did… Around 6pm, Frances called and asked if I wanted to go to a punk rock craft show (it was only ok) and to see the movie Amelie, which was fantastic.. Afterwards we went back to get Adam, Rory, Todd, and Molly and we came back to my place because the TiVo grabbed Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo. When we got here, I went into my bedroom to take my jacket and shoes off, and I discovered that I have guests in my apartment. Or, at least (hopefully most) one guest: A tiny little mouse. It scurried out of my bedroom, past the crowd in the living room, and under the stove. I guess I will have to figure out my strategy on capturing that bugger and getting him out of this apartment… I know that I will have trouble sleeping tonight, not because of the mouse in particular, but I will convince myself about 8 times throught the night that something is in the bed with me… :)
