I have been cranking out the code at pretty fantastic rates the past few days… I am trying to get our document list view buttoned up before I leave today… I am leaving at 5:30 to meet Chuck at South Station… He is coming up for the weekend, and I was hoping that I would have tomorrow off, but I don’t think things are coming together as well as I had hoped (ok, they were pretty unrealistic expectations), so I will probably have to come in for a little while.
XML-RPC is a decent protocol, but it definately has it’s flaws… It is doing the job, however… It is much easier to deal with, as well as more robust than our old proprietary protocol… The support in Java and Mozilla is good, but I am going to rewrite Mozilla’s XmlRpcClient component in C++…. It is currently implemented in JavaScript, including the XML parser! It was even doing Base64 encoding in JavaScript but I shit out a component to do that in C++… Man, what a mess… It was doing type checking and string addition every time it added a base64 value to the return string…. what a mess… It is totally fast now, and I got to reuse some of the Base64 code already in mozilla for MIME stuff, so I didn’t have to duplicate work….
Woke up this morning at 8:30 to construction workers, I believe, but I went to bed a bit after 1, so it is possible that I just got up… The landlord installed blinds in my room last night, so I don’t have to greet the construction workers each morning with my nakedness… I sleep better in my new apartment, and I am not quite sure why… Perhaps it is more soothing, or perhaps it is the lack of drunk fratboys from BC running up and down the streets at all hours of the night.
While I haven’t read the whole thing, this article is pretty interesting…
The cable guy finally arrived, about 80 minutes past the endcap for their appointment, but whatever… The dude’s name was Fabio, and he did things pretty quickly given he needed to drop cable from the pole to the house… It doesn’t change the fact that I didn’t get to work until after 2pm… I guess I will be here pretty god damned late tonight….
AT&T fucked me on a 2nd installation appointment. Just as last time, when I called they said they were here an no one was home, and no one answered the phone. There goes another shred of worktime wasted… This wouldn’t be so annoying if we didn’t have a deadline at work on March 15th.
Update: After I wrote this entry, I took a shower, and got ready to go to work… As I was getting ready to leave, the cable guy called to say he was still on his way and got tied up at an earlier job… It will be a long night at work tonight making up for lost time today…..
Watched both “The Sopranos” and “Six Feet Under” tonight thanks to Omar.. The tape reminded me how much I hate VHS, but fortunately I was able to watch the shows I missed last night, so I can’t complain too much. Both were good, but the “Six Feet Under” episode threw me for a loop… I mean, Brenda was acting so weird, Nate tripped out… weird… I have high hopes for this new season, and hopefully my cable installation will go well tomorrow so I can get back on track!
Picked up a Netgear 8 port switch this evening after work so we could get the file server up and running… The crappy Linksys FW/Router we are using is shitting the bed under load, so we are going to replace it with a the fileserver acting as a firewall… I haven’t set this stuff up under 2.4, and it kicked my ass last night.. Hopefully I can figure it out soon so I don’t have to run up/down 4 flights of stairs to reboot that crappy linksys anymore… :) If anyone knows any good resources for PPPoE/Masq/Firewalling under the 2.4 kernel (like an idiot’s guide) it would be appreciated..
My favorite part of this picture is Jesus suplexing Job.
Here I am at work, and I would say that today was my first real commute in from the new place… Sure, I have done it a few times now, but today was the first day where I woke up and didn’t have to do something in the morning (like wait for AT&T, or wake up early because the guys were coming to finish up parts of the apartment). This morning I woke up without an alarm, which is a good thing in my book, and I feel very well rested… I guess it is time to get into the swing of things here at work….
My parents left a little while ago after breakfast… I sure am glad they came up to help me out this weekend, because it was great to see them and I’m sure settling in would have been a serious chore without them… Pretty much everything I intend to move over here is now moved, and things are starting to get pretty unpacked as well… I am going to set up my CD rack in a little bit to get those boxes out of the way… Now that I have the computer up I get to have music, which is a good thing.. :)
Adam and I did in fact have to sacrifice telephone service in my room in order to get ethernet up and running… I know that there is a piece of cat5 that was intended for data hidden in the walls of this room, but I will be damned if I know where it is.. :) Anyway, I was lucky that they used Cat5 for the telephone service as well, so we isolated the pair that went to my room and hijacked it for data. I guess we should probably straighten that out before we move out, but that’s a way’s away.
I am gonna take some pictures of the new place today and I will post them here later…
