Yummi French Fries

grahams - - 1 min read

I made some Belgian-style fries just now, and they rule… Credit where it’s due, Adam made them earlier and gave me the idea (he also gave me some modifications to the parameters he used that caused mine to come out better).

I pressed Ctrl-Shift-Esc by accident today and it brought up the Windows Task Manager… This is pretty handy..

Múm

Tonight I got to see Múm at the 608… This was their first US tour, and one of their first gigs on the tour. I have never had the “I am in at the beginning of something big” feeling about a live show before, but I have now. They were amazingly beautiful, and they were the best batch of multi-instrumentalists I have seen this side of Mr. Bungle (note: Múm sounds nothing like Mr. Bungle). I am kinda speechless, but the words I can most easily put together was that I wish they were still playing… If I ever do make a film I would love for them to write the soundtrack.

If you haven’t yet heard Múm, do so and thank me later.

Intel vs AMD

grahams - - 2 mins read

I have been feeling conflicted lately…. While I have had a longstanding boycott of AMD products (for a multitude of reasons that I really don’t feel like explaining.. If you are really interested I am sure I have talked about them in this journal before, go find them…), I am starting to grow increasingly suspicious of Intel and their TCPA.. If they really try and go through with this and force it upon me I may have to suck up my pride and switch processor vendors… Christ, if it gets really bad I might have to abandon wintel altogether…

I am not thoroughly convinced that TCPA/Palladium is going to be used for censorship and the like, there is no doubt in my mind that it is pure evil. It is the rampant licensing abuses that corporations are subjecting the ignorant masses to (and they willingly bend over and accept) extrapolated to other media. I support the idea of people being able to protect their work, but I think that there are too many anticompetitive uses of this technology to be considered. I can take a bit of protection to prevent people from stealing your software, but giving companies the ability to prevent competitors from opening files and reverse engineering file formats is obsurd.

If I have to I will switch platforms completely (and I think you know what I mean when I say that, and how large of a statement this is for me to make.. :P).

From building management

grahams - - 1 min read

We recently learned that there will be a demonstration on Monday, July 22nd, between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. outside of One Memorial Drive by a workers’ union from Shaw’s Supermarkets. Shaw’s is a London-owned company and the union is planning to protest the British Consulate, which is a customer in the building.

For your safety and to minimize any inconvenience to you, we are planning the following course of actions.

  1. We will lock the front doors from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. that day, and direct you and your guests to exit out the side entrance. We will have a security guard stationed outside and a guard to direct incoming customers and visitors to the side entrance as well.
  2. If the protestors enter the building lobby, we will recall the elevators and make an announcement over the PA system letting you know that they are temporarily out of service.

Please be sure to pass on this information to all your employees. If you have any questions, please feel free to call the management office at 617-XXX-XXXX.

Second Verse, Same as the First

This weekend was pretty laid back… Saw Minority Report last night with Rory and Laura… It was no Blade Runner (Directors Cut, that is..), but it wasn’t half bad.. I was really surprised how packed the theater was given how long the movies been out now… We walked to the theater (Fenway) and were running a little late, we showed up during the trailers and had to sit in the front, which sucked…

Walked over to the other side (a.k.a. Boston) and went to a few places trying to find new skis but struck out… I will probably have to wait until September before I can execute that purchase… The “leftover pickins” from last season are pretty slim…

I have spent way too much money on CDs and DVDs in the past few days… I bought Amélie and we all watched that Friday night… I love that movie, it simply makes me happy.. =)

I think that’s all for now…

Wash it away

I am lazy today. Verizon is having some difficulties with their network, so I am experiencing severe latency on the dsl today… Either that or it could be those terrorist routers over in Kendall Sq.
