I just applied for YAP (yet another position). This company might be cool, but it’s always hard to tell… They had some clever questions on their posting, but it’s sometimes hard to tell the cool companies apart from the ones trying to be cool.
I did a few hours of consulting work for CYA, helping out my former coworkers figure out some hairy code that was never properly documented. I was praised on how well-documented my code was and I take it as a matter of pride that they didn’t have to contact me for months… I always thought I was doing a good job, and the fact that they were able to pick up my code (which nobody but me and Adam ever really touched) and follow and improve upon it is a good thing IMHO. Of course, I guess if I my code was more obtuse I would have gotten more consulting work, but I would rather have my legacy be a bunch of readable, good code than a bunch of shit spaghetti.
Corinna stopped by for a bit today in between work and her dancing class, which was cool. I’ve been spending most of this evening doing laundry (which is now complete) and backing up data on morimoto so I can rebuild that machine as I mentioned before. 100G of data is alot, however, so it is taking awhile to shuffle it around and burn it to DVD-RW.
Well, we moved in, and I eventually got the cable modem working, and even ran Cat5 to the other end of the apartment so the boys could have internet access too. We had this LinkCyst Cable/DSL “router” lying around and since morimoto (our file server) went wonky in the move I decided to use the LinkCyst until we could get morimoto patched up and acting as a firewall.
Morimoto is pretty fucked, but I have managed to get it “up” enough to copy data off of it. The problem with this is that there is about 100G of data on there and I have to scrounge up the space to back all that data up before I nuke the machine and start over again (I want to remove the SCSI drives, a processor, and some muffin fans out of the machine in an effort to make it quieter since it will be living in the living room). Anyway, this is going to take a bit of doing.
Rory and Adam were complaining about how slow the cable modem was, and after some debugging we discovered that the LinkCyst (latest firmware and everything) was decreasing our transfer rates by 2 ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE (150K/s down to 3K/s). The decision was made to replace the piece of shit with another standalone “router/firewall”. So today I went down to MicroCenter and picked up an SMC 8-port jobber with a print server which seems to be doing the trick nicely.
Sorry i’ve been so transparent lately, I have been dealing with the mountain of unpacking required by the move. I am starting to feel more comfortable in this place as boxes start to disappear and shelves begin to fill. I still have a ways to go, though. My hands are covered with nicks and cuts from various incidents associated with the move. In better news, the move has really fixed up my sleep schedule. I am getting tired around midnight or 1pm now, and waking up around 8 or 9am, which is more in line with most of the humans out there. This will probably be short-lived, however. :)
Tonight I am meeting up with Corinna for dinner and then we are going to see if the Boardgames Meetup is worth a damn. We would give the trivia night at Elephant & Castle again, but tonight is the start of their tournament of champions. After our absymal performance last week we are certainly not qualified for that.
Yesterday was the big move. Rory and I left for his parents at 8am
to pick up his fathers pickup. We got back to boston at 10:30 and adam
already had the minivan and his car loaded with the first load, so we
headed over to pick up the keys and sign the leases. Once that was done
we brought the first load upstairs and headed back to 265. When we got
there Corinna and Matt had arrived and Laura was awake and ready to go.
With the totally awesome help of those guys the move went much smoother
than I could have imagined. Corinna even helped set up my room when I
was trekking back to 265 for another truckload of stuff. She
rules.
The weather held out fine and we went out for dinner afterwards.
Adam and Helen did their own thing, and the other 5 of us went out.
Rory, Adam, and I sprung for the others for their help… After dinner
Corinna, Rory, Matt, and I headed over Steve Bower’s for a party. A
bunch of current/former Rochester peeps were in town for the party.
Corinna could only stay for a few hours (enough to play a group game of
Cranium) but the rest of us stayed until like 5am…. I’m really tired
today, as I only had 5 hrs of sleep today.
I’m about to meet up with the SNFC to see Gerry. More later.
Sorry for the terse answers, but our DSL was turned off today so I am
posting this from the Hiptop.

Finished up with mostof the packing today… My room is about 95% packed (and most of the stuff left over is stuff I need to get by and will just toss in my duffle bag when I am ready to leave), and I just finished up the pantry and kitchen to about 95% as well. I figure I will leave the rest of the kitchen (most notably: the fridge) to my roommates, since I think I have been a swell guy doing the rest of the kitchen myself. :)
Tomorrow I am supposed to meet up with Rose in the morning/afternoon, but I’m not quite sure what the plan is yet… I’m sure we will figure it out soon enough, though.
Not only did I pack most of the kitchen stuff today, but I also made a DVD of “Heat Vision and Jack”. Granted, the video quality is no better than that of the MPEG files I sourced it from, but it is nice to just be able to pop it into the DVD player whenever I want to get a laugh.
The lovely but apparently-not-so-talented Sean and the lovely but apparently-not-so-talented Corinna teamed up tonight for Trivia Night over at the Elephant and Castle. We were gang raped, and it still hurts to sit. I have never sucked so badly at trivia, even when drunk as hell playing Drinking Trivial Pursuit. I blame it on Corinna… She shouldn’t have listened to me when I talked her out of answering “Tears for Fears”.
