I have tried to make this weekend a “Me” weekend, spending some time alone, relaxing… To that end, I have been somewhat successful, Friday night I went over Adam’s for a party, and tonight Molly is cooking up a Pot Roast for the crew.. My original goal was to avoid other people, but I guess my real goal was to have a weekend defined on my terms. As wonderful as the guests that have visited me here in Boston have been, it is somewhat stressing to have to “do the visitor routine” every weekend, and sometimes I need a weekend off. By no means am I saying that I want the stream of visitors to stop, but I need a break on occasion. :)
Saturday I cruised out to the Cambridgeside Galleria to just wander. I ended up picking up replacement copies of the Fight Club and Se7en DVDs that “i no longer possess”. I also started re-reading Fight Club, hoping to answer a few questions I have popping around in my head. Specifically, “Is Tyler a real person when ‘Jack’ first meets him?” Well, I have switched back and forth on this issue, and watched the movie several times trying to decide. I have read the book once, and since it treats the Tyler/‘Jack’ introduction differently, I figured it might be a good place to get an idea of what Mr. Palahniuk had in mind, and how that was interpreted on the screen by Mr. Uhls. I watched the film again yesterday, with commentary by Palahniuk and Uhls, but it didn’t address my question. The book is a very quick read, perhaps it will clear up this conflict. Any ideas?
I also scored Chuck Palahniuk’s new novel, Choke. He is coming to town for a reading next week, I might check it out…
I have played with it before, but I installed FreeNet on my machine here at work, and there is actually some content showing up there (content other than MP3’s, DiVXs, etc). Pretty cool….
Ok, This show last night was at ManRay. This club shares nights between Industrial, Gay, and Goth nights, but it is pretty Goth themed overall. Last night was typically Industrial night, but since there was a show, it didn’t really matter; all kinds of groups came out for it. The sound in this club sucks nuts. I wouldn’t go back there for a show unless it was a huge deal.
The opening band, Hate Department, was terrible. I mean beyond terrible. Remember that crap band Orgy? Worse than them (but apparently took all of their fashion/stage antics straight from the Orgy fashion catalog).
Ohgr hit the stage, and I was really disappointed for the first 3 songs or so. The mix was terrible, and his mic was turned way down, while guys doing backup vocals were turned up. Finally, they got the mix better and Ogre became audible. While I still regret having never seen Skinny Puppy live, seeing Ogre and Cevin Key on stage together still had a bit of magic in it. I was pleased that they didn’t play any Skinny Puppy songs, sticking to songs from the new album, and for an encore they did a song of Cevin Key’s solo album, which didn’t sound as bad as Key’s other solo work. :) It was worth my money, and I had a good time (once the club stopped sucking).
Before the show I met up with Jon Whitney for a burger in Harvard Square. We went to this place called Mr. Bartley’s (which used to be Mr. and Mrs., but we couldn’t get all the details on the name change). The burger was amazing, quite possibly the best hamburger I have ever consumed. Next time you visit me, let me know if you want to fly by there. While we were eating, there was flood-style rains, so we flew back to Jon’s house to shut his windows and unplug his computer. Jon drove, and it was a lot of fun tooling around in this storm… It was funny to think of how this show would have occurred without power, but that scenario never came to pass. :)
I am behind a bit here at work, but whatever, right? I will catch up…
I ask that everyone observe a brief moment of silence today, as a close member of my family has passed on.
Last evening, I had to put Bessie down. She was a good fan, circulating much air over the 20-sum years of her existance. During her life, she required many operations to sustain her life, but she always seemed to pull through. Sadly, this time she didn’t make it.
She provided a refreshing breeze to many people, including myself, my family, phyber, jon, to name a few. It is a sad time, and while there is another fan in my apartment, Bessie can never be replaced. I know that one day we will be together again, but until then, a void has been left behind in her place.
My Mom and Chuck are coming tonight to bring me my New Desk (which my parents got me for graduation) and my bike (which has been in cold storage most of my time at RIT). I think I am going to use my mom’s van tomorrow to get a small air conditioner for my apartment… Last night was really hot, and I had the fan blowing on me so I could sleep, but I think the air blowing on me all night gave me a bit of a cold….
Anyway, it will be great to see those two and show them around Boston now that I know my way a bit more…
…because I spent money yesterday. I purchased something…. frivolous…..
I could not help it though…. The thought of carrying my favorite arcade game around in my pocket was too tempting….
Seriously, it is an awesome little gizmo… The Namco Museum cartridge has Ms. Pac-Man, Dig-Dug, Pole Position, Galaxian, and Galaga, and all of them seem dead-on-balls accurate to the originals. I also picked up Super Mario Advance, which has Super Mario 2 and the original Mario Bros. on it. But the Advance lets you play the old Mario Bros. game with 3 other people… And the super cool thing is that you only need one copy of the game to play, it uploads the ROM to the other players over the link cable…. So far I am happy, although the lack of a back lit screen can be a bit of a nuisance at times, but it is one of those pseudo-new-fangled reflective LCDs, which only require a bit of light to give you good color…
