I am going to be leaving for Rochester Thursday afternoon in hopes of arriving around 7pm, just in time for seeing Dead Alive at the Dryden at 8pm (anyone else planning on going?). I will be in town until Sunday morning… I want to do the following things:
See Dead Alive
Nick’s (Probably Thursday Night after the movie)
Dinosaur BBQ
Play with Drink and hopefully hack together a feature or two
Actually spend time with my friends and actually meet new faces this time around.. My posse was so large on the last trip to Rochester, and our schedule so packed, that I barely got to spend any time on floor talking to people…
Drop a line if you’re in town during that period and want to get together.
Met up with Corinna for lunch at her work, and upon greeting me she gave me a few Samoas… She rocks! We walked around the downtown area and ended up at a deli that wasn’t too bad. I had a turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce sandwich and she had some split-pea soup. Mine was okay, but the stuffing was a bit beat. Corinna said the soup was okay as well, but was a bit thick. After lunch we walked around Quincy Market/Fanueil Hall and just kinda cruised around downtown for awhile..
I pretty much have morimoto all fixed up now. I removed the drives and installed Gentoo last night, and installed samba and the LVM utiltities this morning. I apparently forgot to compile LVM support so I am doing that now. Hopefully after a quick reboot everything will be good to go and i can start copying data back to the machine. Once that gets started I am taking a nap…
I’ve begun writing a weekly movie review column for the Brainwashed Brain. My first review (of Gerry) is available here. I just finished a review of Rivers and Tides, which I saw 2 or 3 weeks ago…
Today was pretty productive, I set up my interview for next Tuesday, returned the cable box, put up a spice rack in the kitchen, and got a new toaster. Morimoto is about 5 minutes from being completly backed up, so I will begin tearing that machine apart tonight and finish it tomorrow. I am also meeting Corinna for lunch tomorrow, which is cool as hell.
Well, as you may remember from my answers to this past Friday Five my goals for this weekend were:
Hang out with Corinna, Hopefully act as an extra in the zombie movie, finish unpacking, and watch the Citizen Kane DVD that I have had out from Netflix for like a month
Well, I definately hung out with Corinna (every day this weekend, no less!), the zombie guy didn’t get back to me until the last minute on Saturday (well after I had already committed to seeing Mose Allison), I would say I am pretty much finished unpacking (although there is still plenty of organizing left to be done), and I just finished watching Citizen Kane a few minutes ago while I lay in bed ill. I am going back to bed now, see you in the AM. :)
Corinna gave me a surprise call this morning to tell me that she had the car and wanted to teach me how to drive stick, and so she came over after I finished eating lunch. We jumped in her car and she drove me over to a parking lot over near the Cambridgeside Galleria. She shut off the engine and we switched seats. After a bit of explanation, I pushed in the clutch, started the engine, and put the car into 1st. I managed to get from a stop to 1st without stalling the car, and even managed to get into 2nd without any trouble (thanks to some good prep-talk from Corinna and lots and lots of video games). I cruised around that parking lot for about 20 minutes and after stalling the car and rough starting it many times (that first time was pure beginners luck) I finally built up the confidence to get out on the streets. I didn’t do that bad, I only stalled the car a few times, and didn’t cause any real major traffic jams.
Towards the end of the trip, however, I was driving back towards my apartment and was stopped behind some cars on Broadway. When the light changed I stalled the car, but recovered before the car in front of me was more than 3 feet away from me. The douchebag in the jeep behind me honked so I flipped him off. I then proceeded down Broadway, not even driving that slow but slow enough to tell the guy to back off. When I was turning left onto Prospect, the guy tried to pass me on the right (there is only one lane of traffic)… I could give a fuck what this maniac was trying to do, so I kept on my way. When we got to the next traffic light, this guy jumps out of his car and comes up to my window. Turns out it was a cop who was driving around in his own car or anything. He just kinda looks at me and I said to him something to the effect of “You shouldn’t have been an impatient dick and honked your horn”. He responded with some steriodal nonsense like “Don’t you see that I’m a cop?”. Since I didn’t break the law (perhaps there is some “don’t flip people off” law, but I would bet there is also a “don’t honk your horn unnecessarily” law), and this guy was just being a dick, I didn’t put up with his shit. He gave me some line like “next time you flip someone off you might get a ticket, don’t be a dickhead”, and I just drove off… Corinna decided that the lesson was over. :)
We then came back to the apartment and watched some TV. You’d think that we’d be out enjoying the beautiful weather, but we are both feeling pretty sick (thanks, Rory! :P). One of the things we watched was the SNL with Christopher Walken (The most recent one he was on), which reminded me I have to dub it to VHS for Sho’time (a.k.a. My Roommate Jon Parise).
I think I forgot to mention that it sounds like I got an interview for the possibly cool position I mentioned yesterday. The date/time hasn’t been fixed yet, but I have been told I will be contacted to set up an interview appointment next week. The timing of this interview will obviously effect the timeline of my trip to Rochester, but unless they interview me on Saturday FUMN will happen.
I very well could be coming down with another upper-respiratory illness, which would make for 5 so far this winter. This time it is Rory’s fault, he has been battling this plague for a few days now. Since I am trying to do my best to fight this off, I have been slamming back the Cold-Eeze tablets and I made some beef stew, figuring hearty comfort food will help my body say FO to the plague.
Say you were an Apple user, and say you wanted to get your hands on the latest Safari beta (v64), I bet you could click on the downloads link on this site to get it.
Here’s my answers to this week’s Friday Five poll. My answers are once again pretty terse, but that’s mostly because the questions don’t really require much elaboration this week.
What was the last song you heard?
Mr. Bungle - Sweet Charity
What were the last three things you purchased?
Beef Stew Ingredients, 5 DVD-Rs, and an SMC Broadband Router/Firewall
What four things do you need to do this weekend?
Hang out with Corinna, Hopefully act as an extra in the zombie movie, finish unpacking, and watch the Citizen Kane DVD that I have had out from Netflix for like a month
Who are the last five people you talked to?
Rory, Adam, Corinna, Mario, and Carlos
I just applied for YAP (yet another position). This company might be cool, but it’s always hard to tell… They had some clever questions on their posting, but it’s sometimes hard to tell the cool companies apart from the ones trying to be cool.
I did a few hours of consulting work for CYA, helping out my former coworkers figure out some hairy code that was never properly documented. I was praised on how well-documented my code was and I take it as a matter of pride that they didn’t have to contact me for months… I always thought I was doing a good job, and the fact that they were able to pick up my code (which nobody but me and Adam ever really touched) and follow and improve upon it is a good thing IMHO. Of course, I guess if I my code was more obtuse I would have gotten more consulting work, but I would rather have my legacy be a bunch of readable, good code than a bunch of shit spaghetti.
Corinna stopped by for a bit today in between work and her dancing class, which was cool. I’ve been spending most of this evening doing laundry (which is now complete) and backing up data on morimoto so I can rebuild that machine as I mentioned before. 100G of data is alot, however, so it is taking awhile to shuffle it around and burn it to DVD-RW.
