I hate people.

My cute little doggie was attacked by a pitbull yesterday while my dog was out in the back yard on it’s run. The dog belongs to one of my neighbors, who decided that they didn’t need to leash their dog. The pitbull latched onto my dog’s neck for a good 3 minutes, but fortunately my dog has quite a bit of spare skin, so the pitbull didn’t hit anything vital (he didn’t even break the skin, actually).

My dog is up to date on rabies, but the vet recommended that she go in for a booster, so that is what I am doing today.

Now it becomes clear....

As I expected, today was the day of realization…..I am actually done with school. As I wake up and complete my morning e-mail checking/job-searching ritual, my friends in Rochester are beginning class. This is heavy.

Last night’s episode of The Sopranos reminded me of the first season… I think this season is shaping up well…. I am looking forward to next week. :)

It's.....a.....lamp

The Digital Bits is one of my favorite DVD news sites, and for about a year I have been entering their various monthly (and now, bi-weekly) contests. I woke up this morning to learn that I am a runner-up in their latest contest. As a runner up, I won a DVD Logo Sign to spice up my home theater. And as a winner, I am not excluded from participating in future contests, either.

These contests are very fun to participate in…. I hear some guy in Terra Haute won a bowling alley!

Cabin fever

Last night I started to acknowledge that I was going stir crazy from staying at home doing nothing, so I made a pact with myself to get the hell out of the house. :)

Chuck and I decided to go out and play pool, which was alot of fun. We played 9 ball for about 3 hours, and we were pretty even (although I was ahead by 2 games). Afterwards, we met James and Amy Bauer at the Victoria Diner. That was a fun time as well, even though Victoria’s has slipped from real diner status (no longer open 24h on weekdays).

Today, I have to run some errands, then I have two things planned, and I am not sure which order they are going to occur. I am helping James buy some network equipment for his basement studio. I can’t believe that he has made so many albums and not had his computers networked together….. Especially given how cheap ethernet gear is… After I help him out with that, I am going out with Amy to see her boutique out in Long Valley… She has some space in this larger store and sells antiques and modern stuff as well. I told her that I was going to visit it a long time ago, but my sentence in Rochester had prevented me from doing so. Now that I have been released on good behavior, it is time to keep my promise. :)

Goddamn computers

I am thinking of replacing my motherboard. The USB on it is damn near completely non-functional, and the addon USB card I purchased to try and make up for the fact that my motherboard’s USB support eats it isn’t much better. I can’t even get my Logitech Mouseman Optical to work on the onboard ports, and when I have it connected to the add-on ports, the OS fails to recognize it about 1 out of every 3 boots. I then have to crawl behind the computer and disconnect and reconnect the mouse a few times until it lights up.

My motherboard (Asus P2B-DS) has been perfect in every other respect, the onboard Ultra2 SCSI works great, I could use a few more PCI slots, but whatever. In replacing the board, however, I have a few demands:

  • Onboard Ultra(2 or 3) SCSI
  • Dual Slot 1
  • Support for all the Pentium IIIs (my current board only supports up to 500Mhz or so)
  • Isn’t completely outdated…

I don’t think that these requests are unreasonable, but apparently the motherboard manufacturers do… There are three boards I have found that are close to these specifications. All of them have limitations:

  • Tyan Tiger 133 - Lacks SCSI, but has pretty much everything else. I could get this board and a Adaptec 2940U2B for about \$200 and be done with it. It is apparently no longer made by Tyan, but I still see it all over the place.
  • Tyan Thunderbolt - Everything plus the kitchen sink…. The major disadvantages are that it costs around \$375 and only has a 100Mhz FSB
  • AOpen DX6G Plus - Everything I am looking for (plus an Ethernet controller), but it only has a 100Mhz FSB (and apparently doesn’t run with PC133 memory installed)

Does anyone have any suggestions? At this point I am just thinking of waiting a little while and just starting from scratch again….

I'm glad I didn't go to school in this state... :)

There are two funny stories in this newsletter for the The College of New Jersey.

First, the fuzz put a boot on this kid’s car. The guy drives off campus, with the boot on his wheel, gets to a parking lot, and changes his tire. I like the way this guy thinks… :)

Second, an employee of the college reports her office keys stolen, and this stupid newsletter publishes the room number and location. So if you have the keys, now feel free to walk into her office and take what you please.

I did something I haven’t done in a long time last night: fell asleep with the television on. But that’s OK, and it might have been a semi-consious decision, because I had Stop Making Sense in. I learned something interesting about that disc last night: It loops all on it’s lonesome. I woke up, it was still on, so I figured I was asleep for less than 2 hours. I finally looked at a clock, and it had been 5 hours.

It also seems that I am more likely to wake up to Once in a Lifetime than any other song (3 times).

Did you ever wake up and feel like you couldn’t move?

Finally, the snowfall has begun in earnest. I went to bed with about 4" on the ground, and as of right now, there is 6" of snow. This big blizzard they were calling for has really turned into a bust, eh? Wunderground tells me that we are only going to get another 2-5" today…

I just tossed some laundry in the washing machine. I was a real klutz on sunday (as opposed to my normal klutziness) and got no less than 3 different stains on my Onion t-shirt. I slapped on some of that pre-treatment stuff and hopefully it will make it all better. Of course, I am definately not a laundry samurai, so I am not holding my breath. :)

Playing catch-up

The past few days have been very lazy for me… I have spent the most time working on the job hunt…

Thanks to my sister, I watched the premiere of The Sopranos at Casey’s (her boyfriend) house. The two episodes were way-cool tonight (especially due to the widescreen)…. the only cheeze factor was the lame CG they used to graft Livia’s head onto that body-double’s body. And it was pretty obvious that they were using canned lines from the prior two seasons… But that was short-lived, and given the bind they were in, they did a pretty good job of closing the Livia chapter. I am really looking forward to this season, it looks like it is going to be a good one. :) My sister and I are going to try and get HBO in the house before next Sunday, but I am pretty sure if all else fails that Casey would have me over again. :)

It is snowing pretty well here, and I am gonna shave and then finish a movie I started a little while ago now. Afterwards, a nice long slumber… :)
