Today was pretty uneventful. I headed out to visit Misti (Building Manager at the new Apartment) to set up a time to sign the leases and get the keys. Turns out we are just going to do that all Saturday morning before we move in, which is fine with me. Ran some errands after that (like getting some lunch supplies) and came back to watch some TV. Spent most of the rest of the day going thru my various bins and receptacles looking for stuff to organize and throw out. I organized the mess of cables I have lying around and also put all of my clothes into trash bags (except a small reserve of clothes for this week) in preparation for the move.
I just finished up a mix cd for Corinna since she had this “deer in the headlights” look when she looked at my CD rack… I figured I would give her a sampler…
Guess I’ve been a bit lax in updating this thing for the past few days… So, here’s a quick flash-backward for you:
Friday night Corinna and Matt came over, and we headed out to Bartley’s for some meaty goodness (since Matt hasn’t been in Boston in awhile, and hasn’t been to Bartley’s for an even longer period). On the way back Corinna asked “I feel like having a drink, if I get something to drink would you guys be interested?”, so we stopped at the liquor store and stocked up. When we got back to the apartment we apparently decided to turn “a few drinks” into a game of Drinking Trivial Pursuit (tm). Rory and Matt suck at trivia games, so Corinna and I were playing the Drinking rules and the boys were a team and were not playing the drinking rules… Needless to say, with this handicap the boys trounced us and Corinna and I were completely shitfaced by the end of the game. Since nobody was in any shape to drive and it was getting late, I took the couch and Corinna took the bed (what a gentleman, eh?)
Corinna and I were in pretty rough shape Saturday so it took awhile to get going. I dropped her off in the early afternoon and came back, turned right around and headed out to Chinatown with Matt. He was on a mission to go to the restaurant supply store for a mortar/pestle, and I was just tagging along. It was pouring, however, so we got completely soaked (especially since we got a little lost walking around downtown). When Matt and I got back to the apartment we once again got in the family truckster and headed out to Jamba Juice (Coldbuster for me, Peach whatever for Matt). We grabbed dinner at The Ground Round over there, and we both got French Dip and their cinnamon pot sticker dessert thingy. I was still in extraordinarily rough shape Saturday evening so we just hung out and watched the Tyson fight in the apartment.
Matt was moving out today, but I knew he was going to have a bad day when he woke me up with the question “Sean, do you know anything about cars?” I put on my jacket and headed outside to give his car a look (in my jammies, no less). His car was turning over but wasn’t catching, and my first suspicion was the cap, rotor, or wires since it was so damp out. I pried off his distributor and dried the cap and rotor, but no joy. Ended up giving up and he had AAA tow it to the service station down the road (which was closed today). He got back and we watched some Good Eats and I went to meet up with the SNFC to see Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Working With Time, which I expected to be boring as hell but was actually really entertaining. Apparently everyone else in the club had the same impression, though, because only 3 other club people showed. After the movie we ate at Atasca, which was amazing.
When I returned Matt said he was going to give his car one last chance before going to bed. We walked over to the service station, popped the hood and turned the key. I noticed that the main ignition wire was sparking where it met the coil, so I told him to stop turning it over. I popped the cable and reseated it, and gave it a squirt with some of that “dry your wires” spray he had purchased earlier in the day. After some cranking (he had somewhat flooded the engine) the engine caught and the car started. We dropped the hood and I had him drive around for 20 minutes to dry the engine off and recharge the battery he had brutalized by cranking the thing all day. Thanks for making me a hack mechanic, Car Talk.
What is your most prized material possession
Probably one of my computers, but I really don’t get too hung up on material possessions. But I know that if I didn’t have a computer handy things would be a real pain for me. I also still have a Dymo Labelmaker that my Aunt Thelma gave me when I was a kid that I keep around even though it eventually broke.
What item, that you currently own, have you had the longest
I have one of my first sneakers (Velcro Smurfs) and also a Snork figurine, both from my early childhood. I just recently had to get rid of the original Atari 2600 my dad bought back in the day because it wasn’t working anymore (and I have a working one).
Are you a packrat
With certain things, but I have kept it under control in the past few years.
Do you prefer a spic-and-span clean house? Or is some clutter necessary to avoid the appearance of a museum
I need a spic-and-span bathroom and kitchen. I think other than those two rooms some clutter is good.
Do the rooms in your house have a theme? Or is it a mixture of knick-knacks here and there
Absolutely not. And I will never have a “fake living room” which is for show, that drives me crazy.
Perhaps I am living in the past. Perhaps I grew up with Industrial music and can’t shake it from my subconsious. Perhaps I am wrong and everyone else is right. Perhaps I don’t have any taste in music. Perhaps I am going to change my mind after a few more listens.
All I know is: Right now, the new Ministry album “Animositisomina” is kicking my ass. I haven’t liked a Ministry album since “Psalm 69”, but I feel like this is the album that should have come after that one. Much like there is no Highlander film after the first, there are no Ministry albums between “Psalm 69” and “Animositisomina”. And “With Sympathy” doesn’t exist either.
Ding, Ding, Ding. It’s way too nice outside to remain inside, so after I finish up a few things here on the Information Superhighway of the Future I am going to walk down the Harvard Square and see if there is anything interesting going on over there..
No real plans for today. I have to say that the past week or two, while the number of job postings I have seen haven’t increased much, my interest in the available new positions has increased. It’s nice to see some actual interesting jobs starting to appear..
Today was rather uneventful, other than the fact that Adam started his new job today. Kinda got me down, being he lost his job after me and found a job before me. I tell myself (and him :P) that he got lucky, which to a degree is true (he had a weird collection of experience that worked out well for him), but I think it is mostly to placate my ego…
I was doing my evening exercises a bit before and while I was doing my push ups my face started bleeding. If those of you who really know me are curious to my stress level, I have been having spot acne occurances since November or December (or possibly even mid-October, really). Heartburn is also at an all-time high as well. That is the Sean weather report.
Ok, I didn’t have dinner with him, but I got to meet William Gibson this evening. He was doing a reading over at the Charles Hotel, and he managed to get here even with the weather as shitty as it’s been recently. The reading started on time, more or less, and Gibson read Chapter 27 (“The Shape of the Enthusiast”) of his new novel “Pattern Recognition”. He did a great reading, and he really got me charged to read the book (I am currently polishing off another book, and have inserted this one into the next position on the list).
He did a Q&A session next, and besides the annoying trekkie who couldn’t keep her fucking mouth shut, and the obligatory hipster question about BLOGs, it was very interesting. I’m really glad I trekked out in the snow for it, even if sitting around in wet jeans for awhile sucked. He did a signing afterwards, and I was about halfway back in the line. Trekkie bitch was directly behind me the whole time babbling on and on about how she met her husband at some convention and how her mom thought it was crazy that she wanted to put trek figurines on top of their wedding cake. It was the longest 15 minutes I have ever experienced, I think a kidney stone would have actually made it better. I thanked Gibson for trekking out in this weather and for continuing to write books that don’t suck. Away he signed and I left.. I took some pictures, in the last one you can see Trek Bitch to the right. She was nearly the embodiment of the Comic Guy, refusing to leave Gibson’s side after she got her books signed, and standing there talking to him while other people were trying to have their time with him. It’s times like this that I see clear evidence that extremely late term abortions would be a good thing (you know, late as in the 90th trimester).
I went out and took some pictures of the aftermath of yesterday’s record snowfall in Boston. My car is visible, so I will probably let mother nature dig it out since it is supposed to be relatively warm later this week… It is an amazing amount of snow out there, though… I’m all for it, even if people are bitching..
