Fun, Fun, Fun

Time to play a bit of catchup again:

Mom, Larissa, and Aimee arrived here Thursday afternoon. We cavorted around Cambridge, taking Aimee to the Curious George bookstore, and loading up on obscene amounts of candy at Hidden Sweets. Mom even bought me a new pair of new Sneaks (mine are black & yellow). Introduced them to Corinna, who came with us to dinner at The Cheesecake Factory.

We went to lunch on Friday and they headed out… And almost as they were pulling out, Amy was arriving (there was about a 90 minute gap or so). I don’t entirely remember the order of operations, but Amy and I have done all kinds of stuff during her visit. Shopped for shoes (for her), went to a museum, ate at some good restaurants, saw The Pianist, and more! (The Pianist, by the way, was good, but it was hard to seperate the film from the bastard that made it).

Saturday night was the party, and while there wasn’t a gigantic turnout, the people who did show up made it a blast. It was great to see Jeff & Giles, and Amy and Corinna didn’t think my friends were complete aliens, so all was well. We played Asshole, but nobody seemed to get too drunk, so that’s a good thing.

Sunday night Amy and I went to see Certainly, Sir, Cex, and The Postal Service. Certainly, Sir was OK at first, but after the first song or so they really started to get irritating (not to mention their lame name). Cex was amazingly fantastic, I’m so glad I got to see him play. TPS was okay, better live than recorded, but in the grand scheme of things they simply aren’t my thing…. I didn’t really listen to the Pet Shop Boys or Erasure the first time around, I definately don’t need it rehashed for me.

Happy Birthday, Tanya!

Friday Five

  1. Who is your favorite celebrity? Hmmm… That very well may have to be David Bowie or John Waters.
  2. Who is your least favorite? This is a really long list, but to start with: Brendan Fraser, Cher, Fleetwood Mac (all of them), The Olsen Twins, Lil’ Kim, J-Lo and Puff Daddy (together or seperate).
  3. Have you ever met or seen any celebrities in real life? Yes.
  4. Would you want to be famous? Why or why not? Perhaps for awhile, but I’d like to be able to humbly fall back into obscurity on my own terms…
  5. If you had to trade places with a celebrity for a day, who would you choose and why? Gavin Rossdale. I don’t think this needs any further explanation. (I’m not sure if this is my _real_ answer, but it was funny and was the first one to pop in my head)

A Mighty Wind

Corinna and I went to see A Mighty Wind tonight in Newton, which was awesome… I wrote a review of it for this Sunday’s Brain, so I will save my indepth analysis for there… That said, I highly recommend this movie, it was great!

Mom and my sisters are coming for an overnight visit tomorrow, which will be lots of fun.. I’m not sure what is planned, but it will be good just to see them. They are leaving on Friday, and then Amy is arriving for a weekend stay… Our party is this Saturday, and at least is coming out from Rochester, so he will be staying here… It’s a guest-o-riffic weekend!

Amy and I are going to see The Postal Service and Cex Sunday Night… She wants to see TPS, but I haven’t ever even heard of them… I’ve heard good things abotu Cex though, so I won’t mind seeing his act.

Dork Games

Adam’s Dork Game night is almost upon us, although it’s original goal has morphed a bit… We are still playing some kind of strategy game, most likely Risk, but it seems that Poker has been thrown into the mix now. The three of us walked down to Harvard Square in search of poker chips… We went to several stores and finally found them at Newbury Comics. I don’t really like card games, so I don’t know if I will be participating, but it will be fun to hang out with friends.

i had to move the party this weekend from Friday to Saturday, so if you are reading this and planning on coming take that into consideration…

Hey!

According to the Associated Press, I live in a “rundown section of town”… Sweet!

I’m going to go outside and enjoy the 80 degree weather in this rundown section of town.

Random Computer Driveby

I was playing around with some random things today when I noticed that morimoto, the apartment’s file server, was apparently down.. I went out to inspect the situation and noticed the machine was whirr-free. I jumped to the conclusion that the power supply had died, so I opened up the case and took a whiff…. Sure thing, it was 0xDEADDEAD… So I ripped it out and drove down to Micro Center to pick up a replacement… I also took the opportunity to return that damn keyboard I bought when trying to debug the KVM problem… I still haven’t gotten that replacement KVM yet… Fuckers… Anyway, I slammed the new power supply into morimoto and everything is hunky-dory… I even think this one might be a bit quieter than the previous one.

In addition, I made the decision tonight to eliminate floppies from my life… I haven’t used a floppy in ages, but I had this box of them kicking around… Most were driver disks or boot disks for various operating systems, but a few had the potential for useful data, so I tossed all the driver/boot disks and set aside the others… I started with 30 disks, 2 of which actually had stuff worth salvaging on it. One was the cover art that James and I did for his Catharsis album.. The other was my old PGP keys which I have retired (not revoked), but keep around in case anyone has the my old public key floating around… I copied the data off them and burned them to a CD… It was kind of a waste to put 2 megs of data on a CD, but it will be nice to rip the floppy drive out of this beast and throw all those damn disks in the trash (which has already happened, actually). I figure that the disks, both of which were from the early 90s, were probably about to reach their EOL anyway, so it was probably a good thing I took care of this chore now.. Now I have another 10 years or so before I have to worry about my media degrading. :)

Gallery

I’ve been moving my photos that were fairly unorganized before over here. This will obviously break quite a few links in this journal as I move them… I will do my best to remember where those links were and fix them where applicable.

Update: In April of 2006 I moved all my photos from a private Gallery installation to Flickr. I have fixed the link above to point to Flickr, but some of the comments below might not make sense anymore as they are Gallery specific.

Uh-Oh

New Beta of Safari was released today, and it has the last feature I was complaining about: Middle-click to open new tab. I guess I am going to have to give it a real test drive now…
