Weird Power Outage

The power went out for about 15 minutes today around 11am… It’s a beautiful day out, so I wonder what caused the outage… I don’t even know if it was just our building or if it was more widespread… Not a big deal, although I noticed that my toilet doesn’t refill the tank without power, which seems kind of strange to me.

I went out to pick up a copy of Risk and get some Jamba Juice down at Alewife… Adam is hosting a “dork game” night here on Tuesday and we needed a copy of Risk, so I went out to Toys R’ Us to grab one, and noticed they were having a Buy 1 Get 1 Free sale, so I picked up the 20th Anniversary Edition of Trivial Pursuit, which I had wanted anyway. I grabbed some lunch, then walked across the street to Newbury Comics to score the new Autechre LP “Draft 7.30”, which I am listening to now. I then walked back across the street to the Hippie Mart to visit the Jamba Juice within.

I walk over to the sacred area to discover that THE JAMBA JUICE IS GONE!!!! No explanation, no justification, just gone. I guess it is time to find the alternate Jamba over at BU..

Anyone know of any good headless automated CD ripping/encoding software for Unix/Linux? I want to be able to stick a CD in my fileserver and have it automatically encoded for me without any interaction..

  2. A solution might be to tell iTunes to use the mounted fileserver storage as the location for its iTunes Music Library folder, and then go into iTunes:Preferences:General, then choose ‘import, then eject’ under the ‘When a CD is inserted:’ dropdown list.

    1. And I quote:

good headless automated CD ripping/encoding software for Unix/Linux?

      CD in my fileserver

Not to mention that iTunes is a complete pile of shit and can’t handle all the mp3’s I have (60G) when they are stored on a Samba share. Not to mention that iTunes can’t name files worth a fuck.

I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have been so specific if I hadn’t considered other options.

  3. I had the word consolation just before solution, but decided to take it out because I it was a little odd and unecessary. I assumed you were more concerned with the non-interactive / insert and go issue than the cd actually being inserted into your fileserver. I apologize and otherwise kow-tow for my impudence. I know that you don’t use iTunes to play your music, but I thought it might have turned out to be a decent solution to ripping it.

File name issues aside, iTunes doesn’t need to scan your library to put music it rips there. I seem to remember older versions allowing you to customize the filename, but now all that I can find is the option to ditch the track number at the beginning of the filename. If the number of songs that iTunes ‘knew about’ got to be a problem, you could just blow away the iTunes music library data file in your home dir.

  4. Some apartment buildings have poor water pressure, so I think it may need to be repressurized in like the basement or something… Maybe that’s why your toilet won’t fill up?

    1. Yeah, I was thinking of that…. It just seems like one more concession to the Matrix… I can’t even flush the toilet without power now. :)
