The trip home was lots of fun… I listened to the audiobook of Neuromancer as read by the author. I had to find mp3’s of the book “out there” because the edition read by the author isn’t available anymore. I figure I have purchased the book enough times to assuage any guilt about stealing the audiobook. William Gibson sounds a bit like John Waters, but with a far more “dorky” vibe. Adam and Matt were surprised how nerdy Gibson sounded, but come on, he wrote Neuromancer! Anyway, having read the book a bundle of times, it was a nice change to hear the audiobook, and it has got me charged to read the rest of the series. I lost (more likely, someone borrowed and never returned) my copy of Count Zero, so I picked up another copy of it at the MIT Co-op.

Anyway, the drive home was rather uneventful (besides some unexplicable traffic in the middle of nowhere of CT well after rush hour). Mom was ultra-surprised to see me and it was good to see everyone back home. Found out that Chuck moved out of the house, he still hasn’t found a permanent place to live, but I guess he felt like he had started to really impose on my parents and found a different temporary arrangement. Talked alot to my mom about stuff, showed my dad Trekkies, went for a boat ride, saw the “crew”… Lots of fun, not enough time!

Return trip was also uneventful, watched The Sopranos with Matt when I got home, caught up on the stuff that was neglected in my absence, etc.

  1. Gibson reading Neuromancer…

Oi… I couldn’t stand listening to him mangle his book. To me, Neuromancer works because it moves, it has energy, it’s electric. His reading of it was painfully lethargic and dead.

Can you tell that I have an opinion here?

Well, regardless, since I think Count Zero is even better than Neuromancer, I’m glad it kickstarted you.

It was definately somewhat dry, but I also thought there was a swagger to his reading… But, then again, perhaps more people agree with you; The other audiobook is still available. :)

Me too… I never finished Count Zero… I started it a good 5 times over the past 7-10 years, but I would always get distracted/hung… I have read many of his book since then, too, but Count Zero has always been the pinchpoint… Rory just started reading it again, and his ravings coupled with my listening to the audiobook have definately given me inspiration to finish this time…
