I’ve been wicked antsy the past few days, dunno what’s going on… I’ve been playing Quake 4 with some coworkers and friends a few nights this week… I’m still pretty good, at least in relation to the people I’m playing with.. I thought I was losing my deathmatch twitch skill after years of not using it, but it seems to have returned with a bit of sharpening.. It’s also the first time I’ve really played with a headset. We all sit on Teamspeak and chat it up, which is pretty cool.. Brian (my boss) runs both servers at his house, and the machine (or his net connection) is starting to get bogged down with the amount of players we have, so we will probably have to figure out an alternative server arrangement. I guess we could play on public servers, but it’s also pretty annoying to have random kids curse you out incessantly and follow you around from server to server when you get sick of their shit.
Five years ago today, I was dialed into MOREnet, using that to telnet into a free ISP, where I had ftp’ed a 4.3 meg ZIP archive into /tmp and began rz’ing it onto my Amiga 500 at 9600 bits per second. I then took that archive, split it up into several 720k archives, and using sneakernet I took the files over to my fathers 486DX4/100. I reassembled the files there, unzipped them, and slowly began to realize that qtest was going to be a whole lotof fun… Of course, the fun didn’t really start until I took the game to CCM and we played our first network game… qtest became Quake, and the rest is history… qtest was also instrumental in meeting Chris, as girls are always impressed by kicking the living shit out of them in video games. Too bad she eventually got better than me. :)
Ok, well, I sure am glad that me pappy got a cable modem, because I am currently downloading the 127MB demo for Quake III Team Arena which was released a few minutes ago. The transfer is screaming now (I’m already past 75%), so I should be able to play any minute now… :)
