“CANCEL THIS, DID NOT WANT IT”

Why are people so god-damned stupid? Someone decided they wanted to unsubscribe from the film club weekly newsletter mailing list. This list is opt-in, so this person managed to subscribe themselves, but apparently clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of EVERY LIST MESSAGE was too complicated and they just sent a message to the list (which bounced). Don’t worry, you lazy bastard, I just volunteer my time running this club, but I’ll do your work for you.

Don’t throw me away

I was reading this BBC article on the growing use of more advanced Artificial Intelligence in gaming. Most of the article focuses on the game Black & White, which is going to hit store shelves in about a week.

A part of the article really got on my nerves, however:

Game makers are turning to AI to make titles stand out in the highly competitive world of computer games. They like it because, if it is done well, it is a very cheap way of adding playability. Instead of spending huge sums on sumptuous graphics, long cinematic sequences, endless levels, characters and plots, a game can be made much more challenging with a bit of nifty programming.

The implication that advanced AI coding is somehow easier or cheaper than “sumptuous graphics”, etc… really bothers me. We have reached the point where programming is important to everyday life, yet it is still somehow regarded as some redheaded stepchild. Being that the team behind Black & White is comprised of some of the most talented artists, developers (who are artists as well, IMHO), designers, and managers, I can’t imagine that they picked up a copy of “AI for Dummies” and snarfed/barfed code to make their NPC’s smart. They instead put hours and hours into perfecting the level of AI that they desired. The article itself quotes Molyneux speaking about how hard it is to get AI right. Grumble.

Stupid People

Ok, the crew over at Slashdot decided to run a story stating that Freshmeat updated their site design. I mean, come on…. Either you are a Freshmeat user, and you will find out simply by visiting the page, or you aren’t and don’t care.

In less irritating news, I stopped back by the Print & Postal Hub, and the helpful guy from yesterday (not the sped) was there, and told me that he would order the translucent paper for the marquee and it would be in on Friday. So the house should have the new marquee installed by Friday!

Gettin’ dumber by the day…

I had forgotten to recount an aspect of my trip to the bank earlier today… After I deposited my cash, I drove away from the MAC machine without my card!!! I felt like such a freaking idiot… I luckily remembered it just after I turned the corner, and quickly sped back, made it to the machine just as it was automatically ejecting the card……
